French Bulldog Breeding Issues
- 15/11/2010
The French Bulldog does not come without its flaws. The breed is expensive in price and the upkeep of the animals health can become quite pricey, even if they are pet quality. As with any dog, good veterinary care is a must. Many owners consider breeding their Frenchie in order to make money off of the offspring or to improve the breeding stock.
Breeding the French Bulldog is not as easy as it sounds. When considering whether or not to breed the French Bulldog, it is important to have an extensive knowledge of what is involved in the breeding process. Only healthy dogs and dogs that meet the breed standards should be bred. Breeders should only select French Bulldogs that show only positive traits and avoid breeding dogs that have health issues. The population of the French Bulldog is small, with the chance of inbreeding much greater than with other breeds. This makes it imperative to research the linage of each dog before mating.
With the extensive knowledge that is required to breed French Bulldogs, it would be wise to not go through the process alone. To become a responsible breeder, it would be beneficial to find another experienced breeder who can assist you through the process. It does take time and effort to find a good breeder that will be willing to serve as a mentor, but time and research on your part will pay off immensely, when wanting to become a responsible breeder of the French Bulldog.
There are many things to take into consideration when deciding to breed a Frenchie for the first time. The dog may not fit the standards of the French Bulldog, and as a responsible breeder, it is important to make sure your dog qualifies as good breeding stock.
Breed Restrictions Of The French Bulldog:
The breeding restrictions that are applicable to the Frenchie, are dogs that do not meet the breed standard. These type of dogs are sold as pet-quality stock. A responsible breeder of French Bulldogs should not breed pet-quality dogs, and it is highly recommended that the dog be spayed or neutered if this is the case.
A reputable breeder of Frenchies will make breeding restrictions clear prior to selling a dog. Breeder will sometimes have the dog spayed or neutered before selling the dog. If the puppy is not old enough to be spayed or neutered, a responsible breeder will require that the dog sterilized within a certain time frame and require the new owner provide proof.
There are also some restrictions that apply to French Bulldogs of show quality as well. Before breeding some show dogs, the dog must achieve some sort of Championship award.
Breeding restrictions should be clarified before choosing a French Bulldog to breed. A responsible breeder will always tell you if the dog can be used for breeding purposes or not. Reputable breeders of the French Bulldog are devoted to improving the quality of the breed. When purchasing a French Bulldog as a puppy or adult, it is important to be aware of the breeding restrictions to avoid any issues in the future.
