English Springer Spaniel - Basic Facts To Know
- 25/03/2013
The English Springer Spaniel, also known as just the "Springer Spaniel", is a sporting dog. They have long ears and a brown or black and white coat. The breed is believed to have first came to be in the mid-1800s where they were originally raised for flushing birds into the air when hunting. They're a common choice as a hunting dog, for drug detection or a companion dog today. Characteristics such as their unique hunting ability and high intelligence are what they are known for. They are known to have originated in England and are a descendant of the Norfolk Spaniel and Shropshire Spaniel.
They're categorized as a medium sized breed of dog. The appropriate female size is 19 inches tall and a weight of 40 pounds, while the male guidelines are 20 inches high with a weight of 50 pounds. Their manner is identified as being cheerful, playful and devoted. They're typically friendly with people they haven't already met, and this means they are unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is ranked 13th in comparison with all other breeds when being trained to learn new obedience commands, and are tested as being extremely intelligent.
They are good towards kids, and that means they are suitable for a family pet. Other animals such as dogs of the same gender and birds don't mix peacefully with them. Grooming them is a fairly simple assignment. They require a proper groom every 4 to 6 weeks, and moderate brushing every few days. They enjoy having a good backyard so they have plenty of room, but can be suited to being kept in an apartment.
They're for the most part longer-lived, as is the case with a good number of medium sized dog breeds, and have an expected life of 12-14 years. Their most common health concern is hip dysplasia, and they're also susceptible to PRA, epilepsy and easy weight gain. Things such as hunting, swimming, learning tricks, obedience training, agility or fetch will provide them with hours of fun. They need long walks every day to reduce the likelihood of destructive behavior owing to their medium to high level of energy.
You need to be able to meet their high demands for mental and physical stimulation if you choose the English Springer Spaniel. They are not an ideal choice for less active owners, but perfect for hunters or active owners and families. One of the reasons why dog lovers opt for this dog is that it has a high level of intelligence and a cheerful temperament that makes it easy to teach almost anything.
