- 27/12/2010
Coat
The English Cocker Spaniels have short and fine fur around their heads, with medium-length hair on their bodies. The hair on their bodies can sometimes be a bit wavy, and silky. But this dog should have a natural-look, so too much trimming is not advised. They come in solid liver, red, and black. Liver and tan, black and tan, can also appear.
Activity
The English Cocker Spaniel loves plenty of exercise. They require long walks on a daily basis, where they should be made to heel behind or beside the one holding the lead.
Temperament
The English Cocker Spaniel is a sturdy, robust, lively, lovable, and affectionate breed that is great with children. They are known to be stubborn, but easily trained, and making them wonderful additional family member. This breed is generally active and friendly, making them an ideal household pet.
Overview
The English Cocker Spaniel is a gun dog that has an active and sporty nature. They can be field, or working, or show cockers. They are among of the variety of spaniels that resembles the American Cocker Spaniel. Aliased as "merry cocker", this breed has a happy disposition and demonstrates it through their waggling tail.
Care
The English Cocker Spaniel requires regular combing and brushing. Bathing through dry shampooing should be done only when necessary, regularly checking the ears for any grass seeds or untoward manifestations, and excess wax should be cleaned regularly. Brushing the hair from the feet down, through the toes, and trimming it level with the bottom of the feet should be done. Trimming should be done in the hair around the pads, never between the toes. Owners should brush out tangles and burrs after they play outdoors.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a hardy breed, but may be prone to a variety of hereditary disorders including hip dysplasia, slipping stifles, epilepsy, and eye problems.
Training
The English Cocker Spaniels are highly intelligent working breed that are known to be loyal and obedient. Some are known to be stubborn; especially the females, but they quickly recognize who the boss is. They are relatively easy to train, and are considered one of the best in competitive obedience classes. They tend to be sensitive, so trainers should never be harsh. Rather, it should be done with firmness, consistency, and patience.
After mastering the basic obedience training, it is recommended to train this breed for more complex activities such as doing tricks. Due to the fact that they were originally bred to work, they love having jobs aside from being a companion.
Character
The English Cocker Spaniel is generally lively, gentle, easygoing, and affectionate. They do not appreciate being isolated, and tend to bond closely with one person in the family. They are known for their adaptability, optimism, and intelligence.
