  • 24/11/2010

Shetland Sheepdogs, otherwise known as Shelties, are great companions. They are very easy to train and are great around kids and other dogs. Shetland Sheepdogs can make a great addition to any family. Here are some training tips.

Tip 1: Shetland Sheepdogs are very intelligent dogs and can learn fast. They can be easy to train because they are easy to motivate; they like treats and toys. Start training early, Shetland Sheepdogs can be cautious. The more you socialize them as puppies the more stable and confident your Shetland Sheepdog will be as an adult dog.

Tip 2: Keep in mind that Shetland Sheepdogs are from the herding group. They do like to chase because of this. Some like to herd children and anything that moves. Redirect your Shetland Sheepdog's desire to chase. Have your Shetland Sheepdog chase balls and other toys.

Tip 3: Give your Sheltie exercise. They need to exercise their bodies and their brains. If they do not get enough exercise they can be difficult to train. Shelties are very intelligent and very versatile. You can do a range of different activities with them. They make great agility dogs, they are great for obedience and tricks.

Tip 4: Establish leadership with your Shetland Sheepdog. All dogs are pack animals. We have to teach our dogs that we are the leaders. The better you are at becoming the pack leader, the easier it will be for you to train your dog. Leadership requires you taking charge and establishing some boundaries.

Tip 5 Shelties can be very sensitive dogs and don't need harsh, physical training methods. It is much better to take a positive training approach. They are fast learners and are a lot of fun to work with because they are so willing.

Start training your Shetland Sheepdog today. Just ten minutes a day is all you need with your sheltie. They are quick learners and once your sheltie understands leash walking, come, sit, down and stay, the quality of life for your sheltie vastly improves.
