History

The Bearded Collie is the descendant of the actual Polish Pastor. This breed of dog ended up being introduced straight into Scotland about 1514 by a Polish marine captain which sold 3 of his bearded collie canines in exchange for a beneficial set of a ram and a lamb. The pet dogs were being reared together with animals which grazed on the field, giving rise to the base of the Bearded Collie dog breed. For centuries, the Bearded Collie in Scotland was used for herding cattle and sheep. It is also known as the "Highland Collie," "Shepherd of the Highlands" and "Flying hair Collie." Collie is a Scottish word which signifies "herding dog" and derives from the black-faced sheep "Colley." The name "Bearded Collie" or "Beardie" is due to the long hair under the chin that runs down their chest, somewhat forming a beard.

General Features

The Beaded Collie dog is strong and agile. It is of medium build. Its head is broad and proportionate to the body. It has a strong and relatively short snout. Their ears are medium in size and fall. Their eyes are the same color as their hair, they also have lively and affectionate expressions. The tail is long, set low, well furred and must never lay on the back, should be carried low with an upward curvature at the tip.

Color

The Bearded Collies hair color changes several times during their lifespan. Generally, at birth, the pups can be: black, brown, beige or blue. Then their hair turns dark to light gray or cream. When Bearded Collies become become adults, their hair tends to darken even further giving them such colors as: black, brown, blue or beige. In the end, a Bearded Collie will have a coat that resembles coat stages between a puppy and a 1 year old adolescent.

Coat

The layer of hair that is closest to the dog's body is smooth, thick and woolly, the outer layer is smooth, hard and rough consistency. It can be slightly wavy.

Temperament

Bearded Collies are energetic dog, friendly and sure of Themselves. It is very noble and playful which makes it a perfect companion for children, to whom he showed great patience. No attitude of being a guard dog because it is very sociable and confident, he enjoys the company of people and not aggressive. It has no problem with other animals. It is an excellent companion dog.

Care

This is a breed that requires some care in brushing department. Puppies need to be brushed daily and adult dogs at least twice a week for half an hour (Or how ever long it takes to make sure the dog is free of matts and knots). We suggest using a conditioner spray before brushing. The eyes, ears and feet should be observed regularly because their coat is a magnet for sharp twigs, leaves and other harmful object found on the yard. This breed of dog needs plenty of exercise, so they make an excellent jogging companion. It is a breed that may have problems with hip dysplasia due to their size, and are also prone to cataracts.

Training

The Bearded Collie is a dog with a great capacity for learning which makes this breed of dog relatively easy to train. They can sometimes be a bit stubborn. We recommend starting with obedience training as early as possible in the dogs life.

Activity

This is a very active breed that loves the open field and use the running for exercise, so they are definitely not recommended for apartment living.

Average Life Span

14-16 years.
