- 12/12/2011
A German Shepherd is a fantastic dog to add to any family home. Whether you have children or not, this breed of dog will fit in to your home like a glove. This breed of dog is highly intelligent and intensely loyal to its owner. Obedience is not a problem either as long as you train your German Shepherd right.
Once you have decided to have a This type of dog as your pet, there are a few things you must remember before you buy one. The first and foremost is that you need to know the background of the puppy. Were there any illnesses that German Shepherds in particular have like hip dysplasia. This is when there is a gradual deterioration and loss of function of the hip joints. Also another good detection of good breeding is to ask to see the parents of the puppies to see what they are like and if they are looked after properly. There are some folks that breed their German Shepherds purely for the money. You don't want that as some of these people have been known to inter breed the dogs which can lead to all sorts of health problems for the dogs themselves.
If your happy with what you see then go ahead and buy, but remember that this breed of dog loves exercise, there are not many "couch potatoes" that you sometimes hear of. The German Shepherd was and still is used for herding sheep, so it is inbred into them that they should have ample energy to burn. Also they can cope with any weather conditions so if you live in the deep Alaskan snow traps, your German Shepherd will be as happy as pie running through the snow and spending hours at play.
The training of your newly bought puppy should start as soon as your puppy comes home. Make sure that your puppy is introduced to the rules you set from the start but also make your puppy know that it is part of your family but it has its place in the home just like everyone else. Once everyone has gone to bed at night, this is when your puppy will miss its siblings and mother, so a good idea is to get a snug warm bed for it and have a soft toy so that it can have some sort of connection and love for something that is not human.
Your German Shepherd will become what ever you want it to be, so remember that if you're aggressive towards your pet, then it will think that this is the normal way to behave. There is no need for any sort of aggression like shouting, hitting, locking it away and so on. All you need is a little patience and an understanding of this great breed of dog and you will never have a problem.
Training your German Shepherd is an art in itself. Getting your pet to understand obedience and have a good idea of socialisation is key. If your German Shepherd understands these two important stages of its life, then your in for a good happy life together.
Learn the best German Shepherd Training methods right from the start. You don't need to pay large amounts of money to have your pet trained because you can do this yourself with the right advice. Training German Shepherds is easy if you know how to read the wants and needs of your pet. Understanding each other is most of the battle. The methods will come more fluent once that's achieved.
