Destructive Border Collie Chewing

  • 18/06/2013

Even if the border collie is one of the most intelligent breed of dogs, he is also the most challenging to live with and take care of. He can be quite smart and has a superior intellect compared to other dog breeds. When combining intensive desire to run, obsessive zeal for working and amazing energy, the border collie becomes noticeable but at the same time unsuitable for many houses.

Border collies like to work out more than anything; they have sharp eyes and are mostly bred and grown in order to participate in sprinting contests and stop-and-go actions. If you have a border collie, then you know you must that you have to walk him for over 45 minutes daily and that you must provide a safe area in which you can play Frisbee with him, but also teach him some agility and obedience classes. If you're thinking of getting one, you must know that without mental, but moreover, without physical stimulation, a border collie will surely become hyperactive and start acting obsessively and destructively, because he must seek creative outlets for his mental and physical energy.

When thinking about destructive behavior, you should know that border collies will do anything they set their mind to, including destructive things. Trying to train them might help, but it's not very easy to do it, as they're constantly analyzing, thinking and reacting when you least expect them. Furthermore, they can be high-strung and also oversensitive to sounds and different touches, this making them hard to cooperate with.

In what concerns their chewing, this is normal until they start chewing on electrical cords, plants, shoes and pretty much everything left in their way. While chewing is a normal behavior in all pets, it isn't normal to see that your dog is basically tarring your house apart. This can be simple to train and fix if you have the opportunity to distract the border collie when you catch him chewing on something he wasn't supposed to. But first of all, you should try to identify the reason of his chewing habits. You should know that some of the reasons include teething while the dog is a puppy, stress, the simple liking of the activity or the lack of movement.

In order to change his behavior, be sure you buy him some great toys that he can chew. Also, try to distract him by saying 'no' or 'oi' in a firm, deep voice. You'll catch his attention and remind him of his mother's growl, making him to take notice, listen and look at you. Reward him with a toy and praise him whenever he starts chewing on one. Moreover, make sure that your border collie has access to all his chewing toys at all times. Also, when he's a puppy, remember to hide from him everything that could be attractive. Limit his access to the rest of the house where you have many wires and shoes by closing the doors until he is old enough to know the rules. Try exercising with him more and increase your training also to know what's in his mind. Let him stay outside when you're away from home, and provide him with chewing toys to keep him occupied.

Among the simpler techniques you should keep in mind when it comes to your border collie and his chewing problems are to make sure he has a lot of toys at hand, to supervise him and make sure he gets plenty of attention and exercise; stay calm if he does something wrong and remember that it's natural for him to chew, but it's your responsibility to teach him what's forbidden.
