Creating A Safe Home For A New Chihuahua
- 01/11/2010
If you are thinking about becoming a new Chihuahua owner, you need to make sure your home is going to be a safe environment for them. There are many dangers which are often overlooked or ignored. Taking some time address these issues will help your Chihuahua live a safe and happy life, which is something every owner should want.
One of the most common dangers for a new Chihuahua is the possibility of being injured or even killed from being stepped on by small children. Oftentimes families with small children will decide to own a Chihuahua without realizing this danger. If you do have children in the house, you need to prepare it to be safe for the Chihuahua by keeping the area where your Chihuahua will stay separate from where your children go. One way to separate them is to use a baby gate to section off the rooms.
Just as children can be dangerous to your new Chihuahua, so can large dogs. Even if your large dog isn't aggressive, they can still be provoked by your Chihuahua and bite them back. Keep your Chihuahua and large dogs separated until they become accustomed to each other. You can let them spend time together while you closely watch them a few times a day until they are comfortable.
As you know, Chihuahuas are small, and this means small amounts of chemicals will affect them on a much larger scale. If you have any cleaning chemicals, detergents, or other possible toxins, you should be sure they are stored in an area unreachable by your Chihuahua. It is also a good idea to keep your Vet's phone number somewhere you can easily find, just in case your Chihuahua ever does ingest something they shouldn't have.
This might sound like common sense to some people, but you need to make sure there are no large or unstable objects which could fall and injure your Chihuahua. Something such as a lamp hanging slightly off a table could be potentially deadly to a small Chihuahua. Just spend some time walking through your house, fixing or removing anything which could fall.
If you have a multiple story house, you should make sure there no is way for your new Chihuahua to fall from an upper story. Even if you have railings, a small Chihuahua could easily slip through and fall to below. Your Chihuahua could also simply fall down from the stairs. If you do keep them upstairs, you should keep them confined to a single room until they are fully grown.
Of all the dangers, one of the most important is having a clean house. This means keeping small objects, dirt, materials, plants, and anything else a they could eat, off the floor. Chihuahuas are known for licking and eating anything they can find, and this can be poisonous to them or cause them to choke.
These are the steps for creating a safe home for a new Chihuahua. Take some time evaluate your house and prepare it them. Good luck!
