Could a Miniature Pinscher Be the Right Breed of Dog For You?

  • 23/11/2010

When you first glance at a Miniature Pinscher it's easy to be deceived by his modest size. But this little dog is game: when she gazes into the mirror she sees a tiger reflected back. This breed is self-assured, spirited, packed full of energy, and bursting with curiosity.

Many people believe them to be a dwarf version of the Doberman, but the only real links are that they both have their origins in Germany, and were almost certainly developed from the German Standard Pinscher. However, the Miniature Pinscher pre-dates the Doberman by at least 200 years.

The Min Pin, as breeders like to call them, was originally bred to hunt and kill rats. Pinscher is German for terrier, a breed that is the scourge of rats. Ratting popularized them in Germany and many of the Scandinavian countries for many years, but it wasn't until the late 18th century before American dog fanciers began to show an interest.

Even so, it wasn't until 1925 that the American Kennel Club registered the first Min Pin in the Terrier category. It was re-classified 5 years later into its present category in the Toy Group. They stand at 10-12 inches in height, and weigh in at 8-10lbs. They're a compact package, topped with a sleek coat, and liquid brown eyes that sparkle with mischief,

Breeders frequently dock their tails, and some still crop their ears. This is a cruel and unnecessary practice; as most of these dogs will go on to develop the customary pricked ears when they mature. Min Pin's sport a short and lustrous coat which can be red, chocolate and rust, stag red, or black and rust.

These are busy dogs. But that shouldn't rule out apartment life. Providing the apartment dweller gives her Min Pin an interesting and brisk daily walk her flat mate should remain in good health. These dogs are naturally inquisitive. So if you've got a yard make sure that it's secure, because the big, wide world is a constant source of interest to many of them.

Min Pins have a mind of their own, so you should start a training program from day one. Be sure to socialise your dog by joining your local puppy obedience classes. It's by early contact with new dogs and new people that you're going to ensure that your puppy will grow in to a well-mannered, and well-balanced adult. There's also a bonus. You'll get the opportunity to meet other owners and their puppies, and compare notes about your doggy experiences-good and bad!

Overall, Miniature Pinschers are a relatively healthy breed. Although some individuals can suffer from patellar luxation [kneecap popping out of place], and demodectic mange can be a problem.

Their short coat means that grooming is a fairly simple task, but they do have their problems with overgrown nails. So, once you've completed her twice weekly brushing, give her nails the once over-and trim them accordingly.

You won't break the bank feeding the Min Pin, but like lots of dogs they will overeat if you allow it. So if your well-muscled dog starts to take on the shape of a Bulldog you know that you need to ease back on the treats.

The Miniature Pinscher isn't an everyman dog, nor is it one for the first time dog owner. However, it isn't renowned as the "King of Toys" for no good reason.

If you're looking for a lively, loyal and intelligent companion; then the Min Pin could easily be the right type of dog for you. But your going to have to put some time in training and socialising him-that way you'll get a "King" to be proud of.
