Choosing a Dog Crate For Papillon Training

  • 23/11/2010

Most people consider their homes as the safest haven, their comfort zone, their refuge to protect them against harsh elements of weather. Pet dogs deserve their own private space too. By providing the right dog crate, you are also giving your papillon the privilege to enjoy his own haven, his own comfort zone. In addition, dog crate is also beneficial when it comes to papillon training.

When shopping for the right crate, it's best to have your papillon in mind, not the crate design or color. Remember that functionality and safety features are more important than the appearance of crate itself. Dog crates come in various types; wire crates, hard plastic crates and soft crates. Wire crate can be used for crate training, house breaking or as an everyday crate. This is in fact the most popular type for it offers better ventilation and visibility for your pet. When buying crate of this type, look for a sturdy one that can be easily folded for storage and travel. Wire crates however are not approved for airline travel.

Another type of crate is made from plastic thus called hard plastic crate. Can also be used as an everyday crate, this type is an ideal choice to carry and transport pets and is approved for airline travel. Hard plastic crates offer better protection for your papillon if something falls on it. Soft crate, on the other hand is made from light weight and breathable fabric material thus is not ideal for dogs that chew or dig as well as dogs with aggressive behavior. A soft crate can be used as an everyday crate but is not approved for airline use. Though this type of crate gives comfort to small dogs like your papillon, this may not provide protection against impact and sharp objects.

When buying a crate to be used in papillon training, you may want to opt for wire crate. It would be wise and economical to choose the one with divider panels to accommodate growing puppies. During house breaking, block off excess part of the crate to prevent your pup from doing his business on the other end and find shelter on the other. It is also important that the crate is easy to clean and does not contain harmful materials and parts small enough for your pet to swallow leading to choking and stomach upset.

Choosing a dog crate largely depends on your pet's size, personality and purpose of papillon training. Choose well for the success of your training.
