The Brittany is a medium sized breed, with long legs, these legs are the same length as the overall body length. This breed has a round head that is slightly wedge shaped. The muzzle is medium in length, with a wide nostriled nose at the end. This nose comes in various shades of colour from brown, tan or deep pink. This is dependent on the colour of the coat. The show dog is not allowed to have a black nose. Their teeth meet in a scissor bite. Their eye colouring is either, amber, brown, or hazel. They have triangular ears that are high set, lying flat, close to the head. This breed has small feet, with well arched toes and very thick pads. They have a high set tail that is naturally short. In some countries they are cropped to 4 inches or less. Their coat is lightly feathered, but never curly, being dense flats or wavy. The accepted colours are as follows; oranges and white, liver and white liver tricolour, black-and-white, black tricolour, either in a short clear roam pattern, with some ticking allowed. The USA and Canada do not recognise black, but all other countries accept all colours.

History: The Brittany dog gains its name from the French province of Brittany, and it is thought to be the result of crossing the orange and white setter and some undefined French dogs. This breed is one of the most popular breeds for bird hunting. The Britney was first shown in France in 1896 and first recognise in America in 1934.

Temperament: The Brittany is an intelligent dog that is easy to handle and train. This is a gentle dog that is loving and obedient and keen to please. This dog is a keen and enthusiastic hunter, but is a freethinking, independent dog. With a great nature and is easy to care for. This breed needs lots of mental and physical exercise, without the required physical and mental exercise, this dog can become unstable and hyperactive with energy building up inside causing a nervous or timid dog. This breed is eager to please, and an enthusiastic hunter so needs to be taken out daily for good long walks. The owner has to set rules and stick to them, being firm but calm, to ensure the best from this breed. Socialising well as a puppy will help the dog building confidence. This dog has fantastic instincts to retrieve in water, and is a good bird hunting dog, although this dog can hunt hares. This breed also makes a good companion dog, providing their expectations are met regarding walking and mental exercise.

Health issues: The Brittany breed can be prone to epilepsy and hip dysplasia.

Grooming: The Brittany breed needs brushing, of their medium length hair; every other day, which is all that is needed to keep your dog in good condition. Careful trimming is required, if you wish to show this dog. This breed needs few baths and only when necessary. This dog is a light shedder. Check your dog ears carefully to avoid ear problems, or treat early with the first sign of a problem.

Living conditions: The Brittany dog, due to its high energy levels, is not recommended for apartment life. They will do best with the large size garden, where some of their energy can be released safely.
