Border Collie Puppy Training

  • 01/10/2011

Border collie puppies need training just like all other breeds of dogs. What we think of now as a little cute fur-ball can quickly change into a disobedient and destructive hooligan. As an informed and smart dog owner do you know how to properly train your border collie?

There is no proper age at which you need to start training your dog. As most experts will tell you that the early you start, the better. This is simply because your collie is learning stuff around regardless whether you're training them or not. For example, if you allow your puppy to jump up on you and other people you could be praising your dog's bad behaviour without even knowing it. It's little things like these that you do today that will chisel and transform your puppy tomorrow. Do you know what your puppy will be like when he or she gets older?

Dogs learn new things every day and the things that they do constantly and get away with it become a habit. As we all know, habits are incredibly difficult to break for humans and it's no different for a dog. The best method to break habits is to prevent them altogether. So what are some of the bad habits your puppy could develop?

Excessive Biting & Chewing - This habit develops in the early stage of life when your puppy bites and chews on objects around to "test the waters" and learn the proper bite pressure. This is completely normal, except for when they do it too much and target the wrong things. I recommend buying various toys for your puppy to ensure dental health and redirect your border collie's teeth away from your expensive personal belongings. Excessive chewing, biting, and nipping could also result from lack of exercise as they have lots of energy to burn and nowhere to direct it.

Separation Anxiety - Many puppies get emotionally attached to their owners and suffer from anxiety when the owner is gone. They can quickly become destructive and tear your whole house apart. Other times your puppy could just bark all day long. To prevent this avoid long goodbyes and don't become emotional when you're leaving because your puppy will sense it and think something is wrong. Act completely normal when you're about to leave.

Obedience Training - Obedience is an important part of your puppy's life and should be enforced every day to ensure a healthy relationship between you and your puppy. Learn a few simple commands such as "come", "sit" and keep practising them daily to ensure your puppy remains obedient. Remember, your puppy wants a leader to look up to so the question comes down to this: Can you be that leader?
