Border Collie General Training Advice

  • 01/10/2011

The Collie is also known as the working dog; a loyal and a hard-working dog that a person can truly rely on. If you are able to train your dog properly, it will surely make your line of work a lot easier since they are able to perform a lot of tricks easily.

A new dog around the house will always bring smiles to every member in the household, except maybe for those allergic to dogs then that's another story. It is always heart-warming to have a dog that would wait for you until you return and greet you with a panting smile while slobbering you with his saliva.

Now, like all dogs, if they are not domesticated they will surely turn out to be a pain the back once they start dropping "bombs" early in the morning around or inside your house. Since intelligence does not come naturally, you would have to train your dog how to behave around different places. Here are some tips to help you train your dog.

First of all, you need to socialise your dog to his new environment. Give him a feel around the house and the neighbourhood. He should be familiar with the people around him so that he does not get anxious and bite anyone. A trip around the neighbourhood once in a while will help you with this.

Secondly, unless you want him to poop anywhere he likes, you should provide him with a container or a crate that he can do his business in. This should be placed on a particular corner inside the house, or if you do not want the dog in the household, then you should provide him a doghouse and place the container beside it.

So as to help the dog remember these things, you should develop a routine so that the dog would get the flow of where and what he should do at that appropriate time. This will also aid the dog in knowing his place and his roles. Some routine tips would include, feeding the dog after you have eaten, or that the dog should never sleep with you in your bed, or avoid feeding the dog foods that come from your table while you are eating.

Finally, you should know how to properly reprimand your dog. This will help avoid spoiling the dog. While reprimanding your dog during training you should keep in mind that all those tips mentioned above are not learnt in an instant. This part here requires lots and lots of patience. Remember that training your Collie is not just about telling him who is boss, but it is also about showing him where he belongs and what he should do. You should only reprimand him if and only if you have caught him in the act. Even if you have seen poop somewhere, try to minimise it so as not to lower the dog's esteem so much.
