Taking Care in the Cold Weather

  • 27/11/2010

When the temperature drops pets too feel cold just like us. It is better to keep him warm using jackets or wraps. Its fur might not be enough to protect him. Some long haired breeds like Golden retrievers, Collies and German shepherd can manage a slight drop in temperature. But we have to give extra care for the short haired breeds like Boxers and Weimaraners. Some of the breeds like Chihuahuas, Dachshunds and the Poodle may get respiratory infection like pneumonia if exposed to cold. Extra care should be given to young as well as very old pets. Wraps or coat should be given to the pet regardless to its size or breed when the temperature is below normal; especially early in the morning and late in the evening.

Clothes that you should choose

A fleece-lined water-proof coat or seat shirt is advisable during a bitter cold day. A wrap is also a better choice but you should make sure that it covers all four legs, neck and rump and it also protects the vital organs there by keeping the dog comfortable.

Points that you should remember when you choose jacket or coat

Jacket/coat should not be too tight or too loose and it should not restrict the free movement of your pet.

Better to avoid clothes using artificial fibres as the chance of getting a skin infection is high if it comes in to direct contact with your pet's skin.

Stitching a reflective strip on the coat will be really helpful to spot your pet in low light conditions at dusk and night-time.

Use of a blanket at night helps to keep your pet warm and safe. It's better not to use a "heater" as it may cause dehydration. If you're using a heater make sure that you keep it at safe distance else chances are there that your pet may get burned or knock the heater and put the entire household in danger.

Keep warm and good luck this Winter ...
