Including Your Dog in Your Wedding

  • 14/02/2011

There are many couples today that are including their dog in the wedding ceremony.

If your dog is really well trained, you might be able to call him/her when it's time for the ring to be presented.

You can tie the rings in a little pouch or tie them on a lovely ribbon around your dog's neck. It probably would be better to wait till just before the ceremony begins to do this.

You will need someone as a designated dog handler, definitely someone that your dog already knows, to be responsible for your dog during the entire event. This person will need to look after your dog's needs, making sure that there is water available for your dog and to remove him/her if the excitement becomes to overwhelming.

You need to know how your dog handles crowds and strangers. If he/she growls, snaps, barks or is afraid of a lot of people, then perhaps including your dog in your wedding ceremony is not such a good idea. But, you need to know this beforehand, not 10 minutes before the ceremony begins.

All dogs have limitations. Don't forget that you are dealing with a canine brain, so don't try to push your dog into a situation that might become out of control.

Just imagine a three year old girl as a flower girl. She can be very unpredictable, too.

If you are sure that your dog will fit into your plans, then you must do some very solid planning.

If your wedding is being held in a church, you need to find out if dogs are allowed.

If you have a child handling your dog, make sure that the dog isn't to strong for the child. The last thing you need is to see your dog dragging a small child down the aisle! Or knocking the child down.

Even if your dog won't fit in at the ceremony, you can still include your pet on the wedding invitations.

Add your dog to the cake topper.

If you don't want to leave your dog behind when you leave for your honeymoon, you can find accommodations that allow dogs.

There are many fine hotels that allow dogs and even have dog walkers for them.

Also, many bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, cabin rentals or some timeshares allow dogs. Or maybe you might rent an RV to tour around, so you can certainly take your dog with you.

Just remember, not to leave your dog alone all day in strange surroundings, while you sight see. You don't want people complaining because your dog is barking or whining while you are away. Make sure your dog is always comfortable, has plenty of food and water and toys. And be sure to always clean up behind your pet.

So many of us regard our dogs as family members, so it is not unusual to want to include them in a wedding ceremony. Be sure to take a lot of pictures for your album.

What fun you will have!
