How Do I Care for My Dog When I Work Full Time?

  • 11/11/2019

Owning a dog is one of life’s fulfilling moments. You get to experience the joys of caring for a furry friend and have that reciprocated with lots of love and licks.

But owning a dog is not always easy, especially if you are working full time. The crazy working hours combined with your pet's increasing needs exert a lot of pressure in your life.

Sadly, many pet lovers have had to surrender their favorite dog to a shelter near them. The pressure was too much and they had to tap out.

This does not have to be your story as well. It is possible to work full time and still spare some hours to spend with your pet.

Did you know?

Some dog breeds easily suffer pet anxiety when left alone for long hours? Toy breeds are affected the most and easily develop destructive behaviors.

It is important to spend time with your dog. Fortunately, we are going to give you tips on how to do that.

1)    Go to work together

You could always work with your dog. If your work is not location-dependent, you can find suitable pet-friendly workspaces in your area. For a reasonable fee a month, you get a dedicated workspace and a resting mat for your dog. Some coworking spaces even provide treats and toys for your canine.

2)    Go on dates

If you are not in between jobs, you can go on dates with your dog in the evenings. Identify pet-friendly restaurants in your area that provide sumptuous delicacies for you and your canine friend. This would be a great time to try out new delicacies and even get recommendations on how to spruce up your dog's diet.

3)    Make meals together

After a very long day, you always have to go back to your precious home. You can choose to spend at least an hour doing something you love with your dog. You could make a great meal and sit down to eat together. If you love playing an instrument, painting, or knitting, let your canine join in the fun.  An hour of your time is enough for your pet to feel loved.

4)    Invest in lots of pet toys

Toys are great for keeping your dog busy while you are away. Buy different kinds of toys to engage your dog’s mind. A great toy for your pup is a treat dispenser ball. Your dog can chew or kick it around and each time a tasty treat is dispensed.

5)    Get a Pet sitter

Pet sitting services are great for pet parents who work full-time. Do a background check before hiring a pet sitter. Let them give you referrals of previous clients they have worked with. If the sitter has an online page, check customer reviews and ratings. Only hire a pet sitter who is friendly, trustworthy, and is good with pets.

6)    Look for a pet boarding facility

Pet boarding facilities are the next best option if you cannot find a suitable pet sitter. These are pet hotels that look after your pet while you are at the office or away on a business trip. Similarly, check customer reviews and ratings to confirm that your dog will be getting the best treatment from the pet boarding facility.

Final Thoughts

Even with a busy schedule, it is still possible to spend quality time with your dog. You can go to work together or schedule ambient date-nights. Invest in pet toys and try spending at least 1 hour with your pet every day. If time is not on your hands, then consider pet sitting and pet boarding services.
