Bichon Food: How to Find the Right Diet for Your Bichon

  • 01/10/2011

As a Bichon owner, I know how picky they are with their food. I went through bags and bags of different brands and types of food before I finally found one that my Bichon would eat. This is not unusual. Many people struggle trying to find the right food for their Bichon. To make things even more complicated, this breed is known to have very sensitive allergies and can have allergic reactions to ingredients in some cheaper brands of food. In this article you will find advice on who to talk to about Bichon food and tips for picking out the right food.

Who to Talk to:

I went through quite a bit of trouble with my first Bichon. I had been a dog owner for many years, so I thought I was prepared for raising a Bichon, but I had no idea how much different she would be from the labs I had had before then. So, when I decided to get a second Bichon, I thought a lot about the challenges and difficulties I had with feeding the first one and decided that I would ask for help with the new puppy. The first thought that came to mind was to talk to the breeder that I bought the puppy from.

Breeders are an excellent source of information because they generally have years of experience in raising and caring for a specific breed of dog. Among other questions, I asked my breeder about Bichon food. She gave me excellent answers that helped to guide me toward finding the right food for my new puppy. Now, there is no one specific food or brand of food that ALL Bichons will eat. For this reason I do not want to tell you that what worked for me and my breeder will absolutely work for you. But I would like to give you a few food related questions that you should ask your breeder:

1. What kind of food do you feed your adult Bichons?

2. What kind of food did you feed them as puppies?

3. How long did you feed them puppy food, and when did you switch them to adult food?

4. Do you know of any specific foods or brands that have been known to trigger allergic reactions in Bichons?

Starting with these questions will help your breeder guide you toward a good food for your puppy, and most breeders will be happy to help you out with this.

I know that not all people buy their Bichons from breeders, and Bichon adoption and rescue is another popular way of buying Bichons. So talking to someone at your local animal shelter or your veterinarian may help as well. Shelter workers and vets may not have as much specific information as breeders, but they do have experience with dogs in general so they can have good information for you.

Finding the Right Food for Your Bichon

You will still most likely have to experiment with trial and error. As said before, there is no certain food or brand that EVERY Bichon will eat so it may take time and experimentation. The good news is that if you talk to your breeder or vet, they will be able to steer you in the right direction and this will cut down your efforts drastically.

Over time, and with some trial and error, you should be able to find a dog food brand your Bichon will love. Just remember to ask the right questions and do your best to eliminate foods known to cause allergic reactions and you and your Bichon will live a happy and healthy life together.
