Beagle Training Made Simple - 5 Top Tips To Success

  • 16/08/2012

Do you want to know the tips that will guarantee your success when training your Beagle to become a happy, healthy dog that is a joy to own? You will if you read on.

Tip 1 - Leverage the characteristics of the breed.

Beagles are scent hounds and, therefore, any Beagle training method you adopt must consider its hunting instincts. It would be a mistake to belittle the dog's intelligence. Though they are obedient and sociable, Beagles are after all hunting dogs that can be turned into great watchdogs and companions for the home.

Tip 2 - Patience, consistency and fun is the secret sauce.

Several aspects of training may require persistence on your part at the initial stages. Many choose to hire training professionals or enroll the puppy after eight weeks into a training school teaching obedience techniques, both to the owner and dog. Some may choose to train the puppy at home. Exciting times await such dog owners. If they are passionate about their puppy, training sessions become exciting and fun-filled events.

Tip 3 - Start your Beagle's house training as soon as you bring them home.

Housebreaking is one of the most important aspects of training your Beagle. You just cannot afford to neglect the vital aspect as soon as the dog enters the house. It is quite evident you would want your dog to poop outside the house. How will the dog understand it has to do so? This and other aspects of Beagle training, therefore, must be tackled within the first few days of the pup entering the home.

Tip 4 - Crate training is a must

Find an obvious place for the puppy to call its own. A crate can be provided at a discreet location that also enables the dog to have a glimpse of family members moving around. The Beagle is a clean dog and will not dirty the crate, if it also contains food and water. Some dog owners allow the puppy to poop within the crate and then take the puppy out every hour or so encouraging it to find its own spot to poop. The puppy soon realizes it is messing up its space and follows its instinct while learning to eliminate outside the house.

Tip 5 - Learn the basic commands first

Commands such as "come," "sit," or "stay" are basic commands the dog learns through repetition. Some Beagles may learn commands faster than others. Several reasons can be attributed for the learning speed including orientation and the way you present a command. Again, persistence will help you get through to the dog in time.

For example, there are several aspects to the "come" command that come into play, no pun intended. You would definitely not want the dog to respond to a negative experience with the "come" command. So it must be able to interpret what you actually mean when you use a specific instruction. Offer your Beagle treats (Beagles will do anything for food) and praise the dog every time it succeeds. Through trial and error, your Beagle understands it must respond when issued a verbal call. Dog owners should feed the dog with treats every time it responds either partially or completely. Training becomes easier, if there are at least two dogs following the same instruction.

BONUS TIP - Learn how to become the alpha leader of your home as soon as possible.

Beagles respond positively to their master, if they consider them to be their pack leader. As the alpha dog in your household you will need to learn how to respond to signs of separation anxiety and fulfill its hunting instincts, among several other Beagle training techniques. Most of those techniques are based on the understanding of how to become the alpha dog of your pack.
