Beagle Training Advice For Home
- 31/10/2010
For anyone who has ever had a Beagle you know that they are quite the stubborn dog. And if you are a new Beagle owner, you should understand that Beagles are little more stubborn than other dogs. So please keep that in mind when you start your Beagle dog training. If you want to train a beagle the right way then you need to possess one essential trait: you would need loads of patience in your beagle training methods.
Remember that the Beagle breed of dog was developed as a cross breed of several other breeds of hunting dogs back in England. According to records, the beagles were developed for one particular purpose - to hunt. Being bred for centuries as hunting dogs is what gives the Beagle his stubbornness. Hunting dogs have a stronger sense of smell then other dogs so they are attracted to every new smell that comes to their nose. This can cause you get frustrated with your beagle obedience training.
When training a Beagle you need to teach him or her the basic commands first. These basic commands are Sit, Stay, Heel, & Lay Down. All dogs, not just beagles need discipline in their daily life. Dogs are pack animals, and they will follow you where ever you go, so it will benefit you in the long run to teach your Beagle these basic commands. Beagles usually respond very well to food rewards. You can also use a favorite toy as a reward while performing your beagle training.
One good tip I would give to any Beagle owner would be to direct their beagle training toward controlling your dogs begging. As mention earlier, Beagles have a strong sense of smell, that means they will always be where the food is. When beagles are around food they will perform various tasks as to try to gain your attention, and the food of course. They will cry or whine at you, jump, stand on their hind legs, and pretty much anything else to try to get themselves a little snack. And lets not forget your Beagle giving you those big puppy dog eyes!
Some other beagle training advice I would like to give any owners is that, beagles are very energetic dogs. They love to run around and play and if you don't train your beagle properly in the beginning, you are in for a tough time when they get older because your beagle will be set in his way for good. Setting yourself and other members of the family as pack leaders should be an essential part of your beagle training from the start. When your Beagle successfully follows your commands praise him for it, and do it all the time. Beagle find great enjoyment in being able to please their owners.
