Basic Information About the West Highland White Terrier

  • 26/11/2010

The West Highland White Terrier is an amazing breed of dog. Sometimes they are referred to as Westies and they have a very spirited and unique personality. They make a great pet for adults and older children as they are very friendly and love as much attention as they can get. However, they are not recommended as a pet for small children. They are well-known for their energy and persistence. They do show aggression towards their prey which consist of smaller animals such as squirrels and rabbits. They have the appearance of a guard dog because they are always alert and ready for anything.

They also are considered to have strong bone structure to be such a small breed of dog. Their head has a rounded shape and their limbs are very muscular. The West Highland White Terrier has a brilliant white coat and normally weighs between fifteen to twenty pounds. The average height for this breed of dog is eleven inches. One thing that amazes many people is the fact that the teeth on this breed appear to be large compared to the rest of its body. This is probably due to the way they interlock with each other and they have what is referred to as a scissor bite.

The West Highland White Terrier has been used in several commercials and on the label of different packaging for items such as dog food. Their unique qualities have made them very popular. They have beautiful bright but deep-set eyes and are said to have a penetrating gaze. Their ears are small but stay pointed and upright unless they are irritated and annoyed about something. Naturally they have a rough outer coat that is medium length and a soft but rather dense undercoat. They also have webbed paws, which is something a lot of people do not know about. They need room to run and play to stay happy and healthy.

The West Highland White Terrier is a very possessive dog when it comes to their master, food or anything that belongs to them such as their favorite toys. It is highly recommended that if you see one of these dogs with their tails hung down and their ears laid back, stay away as they are probably in a bad mood and don't need to be provoked. Regular grooming is a requirement if you would like to have one of these beautiful dogs as a pet. To sprite their temperament they do get along with other animals and make a wonderful companion that can show you plenty of love and fun.
