Basic Facts To Understand About The Yorkshire Terrier
- 25/03/2013
The Yorkshire Terrier (also called the "Yorkie") is a toy dog. They have a silky blue and tan coat, a small face and perky ears. The breed is believed to have first existed during the mid-1800s. Catching rats is what they were initially raised for, though they're popular as a companion or show dog nowadays. Characteristics such as their pampered appearance and feisty temperament are things they are are known for. The breed is assumed to have originated in Yorkshire and their breeding lineage includes the Maltese and a large number of terrier breeds.
They're recognized as a tiny sized breed. The appropriate measurements are 6-9 inches tall with a weight of 5-7 pounds. Their character is famously known to be busy, curious and often stubborn. They are unsuitable as a protection dog, as they are small in size though they are generally suspicious with strangers. They are identified as being highly clever, and scores 27th in comparison with every other breed when being taught new obedience instructions.
They're sometimes snappy with kids, which makes them not very suitable as a family pet. Other animals like other dogs and pets (any introductions should be slow) don't mix peacefully with them. One time consuming assignment is grooming them. They need regular brushing through their coat once every day or two, and a proper groom once every 3-4 weeks. They can very easily be suitable for being kept in an apartment, but like to have a small (though are quite happy without one) yard so they have plenty of room.
As with the majority of tiny sized breeds, they're for the most part long-lived and have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most common health issue is injuries and broken bones, and they can also be vulnerable to bronchitis, patellar luxation, hypoglycemia, cataracts, PRA or tooth decay. Activities such as play sessions with their owner will give them great pleasure. To prevent the development of bad behavior, theyshould be given short walks each day because of their high amount of energy.
If you own the Yorkshire Terrier you must be ready to provide them with early training and lots of attention. They're not an ideal choice for households with other pets and young children, but very suitable for gentle owners or families with older children. Here are just a few qualities you may love about the Yorkshire Terrier:
- One of the more attractive features in regards to this dog is it is able to live anywhere because of their small size.
- Another appealing feature regarding them is their appearance is simply adorable.
- One other quality people find attractive when it comes to them is it is very easy to fall in love with their bold and feisty character.
