Wintertime Fleas

  • 30/11/2010

Even though wintertime comes and it is cold, fleas are still present. The warm weather makes a huge flea population. The fact that it is cold only means that fleas will now move indoors. And that being said, fleas have become more resistant to treatments. So now a pet owner must face being invaded by fleas. You don't have to call the exterminator or start buying flea bombs. There is a low-cost natural way to rid your home of fleas.

First you need to vacuum, vacuum and more vacuum. The vacuum cleaner is the best defense against fleas. It will suck up the adult fleas and their eggs. For it to be effective you need to vacuum often. You will also need to do it thoroughly. That means getting under and behind furniture, baseboard and under floor registers. Also, it is a good idea to clean upholstery, drapes, and other plush items. When finished, empty the canister or throw away the bag. Fleas can escape the vacuum and the egg's can hatch in the bag or canister, so empty immediately. Daily vacuuming is the best when you begin treatment, you can also use a steam cleaner as the hot water and soap will kill fleas.

Be sure to wash all your pet's bedding and toys in the hottest water and dry on high heat. You should wash out their crates too. You will need to do this every three days or so until it is under control. Eggs will hatch about every three days. Once under control, you can keep up on it once a week.

You can make homemade carpet treatment. You can mix equal parts of table salt and baking soda in a container and then spread on carpet. It is best to leave it on overnight. Work it into the carpet with a broom. The salt dehydrates the fleas and kills them and the baking soda will break down the covering on the eggs and preventing them from hatching.

Use a flea comb. It has tiny teeth and will trap adult fleas and eggs. Keep a bowl with warm soapy water to drop the fleas and eggs in. It can take a lot of time, especially for dogs with a lot of hair. You will need to do this everyday in the beginning and then every other day. After it is under control, once a week is good for preventions.

If you use cedar shavings in our pet's bedding or in their crate, will make the fleas look for a new place to go. They can not stand the smell, it will not kill them, but they will go running in search of a new place to live.

Bathe your pet often, it is inexpensive and a good way to control fleas and you only need to use warm soapy water. When you d. Rinse well. You can repeat this process every two weeks.

If you use these natural methods for flea control, you will save money and also rid of your flea problem on your pet's and in your home.

Fantastic, we must not use poisons on our animals.  The earth and all creatures are precious.  Love your attitude.
