You Can Find Your Perfect Companion And Save Money By Adopting A Shelter Dog
Animal shelters and humane societies are the perfect place to find your next companion. Let's face it, we Americans have a huge overcrowding problem in our animal shelters. Every day in the U.S. on average 10,000 babies are born while 70,000 puppies and kittens are born, there is absolutely no way possible that we will have enough homes for all of those animals. Another disturbing fact is 56% of animals that enter shelters will be euthanized and it will only get worse, horrible fact. Well there is way to start dropping these numbers and preventing more pointless animal deaths. Start finding your dogs (and cats) from animal shelters. Here I will disprove a few common myths about shelter dogs...
1. I want a purebred dog and there aren't any in the shelters...
Give or take, about 25% of all dogs in shelters are purebred. Some people say, yeah but they are all Pit Bulls and German Shepherds, even if that is true they are great loving breeds but it is not. Do a test, and search the shelters and see how many Labs, Pomeranian, Boxers, Pointers... you name it and you will find what you are looking for. And if you are curious how to search for these dogs or you think that it is to time consuming just try using these websites.
Petfinder.com, petango.com and petharbor.com are all great websites and most animal shelters post their available animals on these sites with petfinder being the largest. You simply type in your zip code and desirable breed and it will show a list of dogs starting from the closest to you and going as far as you prefer.
2. Shelter Dogs Have Behavior Problems...
When dogs are in the animal shelter they are under extreme amounts of stress. They are confused, alone, feel abandoned, not sure what they did wrong... In other words when you see a dog in the shelter he is absolutely not going to be himself. If you are unsure take him out for a few walks, spend sometime with him before you adopt him... or her and I guarantee that he will be a completely different dog than the one you see in the cage as you walk by.
3. Somebody Will Come Claim Him...
Only about 15 to 30% of dogs in shelters are reclaimed each year... so where did the other 85 to 70% come from? Irresponsible owners, it's not the dogs fault they are in the shelter but the owners.
4. Someone Else Will Come And Adopt Him...
Maybe, but only 14% of people get their dogs from animal shelters. The other 86% get theirs from friends, breeders or pet shops. By everybody adopting their dogs from shelters, pet shops would have to close Breeders would close up shop and less animals would end up in the shelter which means less animals would have to be euthanized each year.
So next time you're ready for a dog please remember petfinder.com, petango.com and petharbor.com and do a simple search of the breed you are thinking about and see what happens.
Thank you so much for reading and I really hope you take my advice.
