What Do You Know About Dog Socialization?

  • 01/02/2014

Have you ever tried to walk your canine, and on the way met strange dogs, and other animals as well? Did your canine start to bark, freak out and start to growl and attempt to bite these strangers? Did it get to the extent you had to stop taking your dog out for a walk or run around the neighborhood because of this?

Typically the above problems arise due to various factors. The first thing is your canine may feel insecure in its relationship with you, the owner. Canines need constant and firm guidance and if they do not feel secure they will become unsure and agitated about the role they play in your life.

You may be wondering what is dog socialization and what can it do for your own canine? And what benefits can it provide for your canine and for you the owner? Dog socialization is the practice you can provide for your own canine by introducing your dog to other dogs, other people and other animals as well make your canine feel comfortable to be around these strange people and animals.

If you have a guard dog, dog socialization is not for your canine. A guard dog needs to be trained with the 'guard on command method' to train him into the guard dog he is. Typically guard canines are not easily socialized and their main focus is guarding their own territory, which is your home.

If your canine, is not a guard dog, and should act like the one mentioned above, you will have lots of work to do for it.

Your dog is a 'red light' case, and needs to be handled very carefully even whilst you teach him to accept strangers to your home in any given situation or condition.

But when your canine has only mild problems and accepts the strangers around him, your canine can be considered a 'yellow light ' and still needs some care and help, but not too much.

But if your canine can walk up towards strangers and start behaving inappropriately without warning, whether they are people or other dogs or animals, always remember 'green lights' may become 'red' or 'yellow' if you are not very careful.

Why do you need to give your dog socialization?

Dog socializing is very important at more than one level. And it will not reflect well on you, the owner, if your canine is not a well trained canine and it will be considered physically or mentally healthy if it has anti- social behavior.

When social conditions really stress an anti -social canine and cause it to have mental stress and physical stress, it can lead to barking, growling and pulling and other anti-social behaviors.

Dog socialization is very important for your canines' training to keep them healthy and well mannered at all times.
