The Puppy Checklist: The Essentials for First Time Pet Owners
- 05/10/2013
This may be your first time to actually own a pet, and you feel a little lost on what you should be doing. Of course, taking care of a pet, especially a puppy, isn't all that easy to do when you have no idea of how to go about it, which is why you should spend a lot of time coming up with the necessary preparation and knowledge to keep yourself ready for any unexpected situations involving your new furry best friend. It's always important to be prepared for the first time, especially when it comes to taking care of a pet puppy that will soon grow to be one of your must trusted companions in life, so you need to make sure they are kept happy and healthy as well.
So for new puppy owners, here are a couple things you need to keep in mind:
1. Rabies Shots
It's highly important that you keep your puppy free from the possibility of diseases such as rabies. This means that you will need to put them through vaccination, at least twice. Keep them in the house and away from outside exposure until you've had them vaccinated for the second time, as this will prevent them from getting any sort of illness.
2. Deworming
Once that's settled, you can then worm the puppy once every 2 weeks until he/she has reached 12 weeks of age, after which you can then extend it to once every month once they've turned 6 months old. This is something which should be implemented at least for every 3 months as your dog continues to grow.
3. Flea Treatment
Flea treatment is something that should be ensured, seeing as fleas can be rather annoying to your pet as well. They can also have a detrimental effect on your and your family's health when left neglected, especially if your children love to roll around with the puppy on the carpet, where most fleas would then reside, causing anemia or even the much dreaded tapeworms. You can get professional help for flea treatment or you could go buy a topical solution to apply to your pet yourself.
4. Socializing
Of course, another important thing to take into consideration for your pet puppy is socializing. It's highly essential that your pet doesn't remain indoors all the time and fails to interact with other dogs and human beings outside of your own household, especially at such an early age. You will need to train them on how to follow commands and take them for strolls every now and then so they won't feel strange in different surroundings.
