The Family Dog and Your New Baby

There aren't too many things cuter than a puppy. Except maybe a new baby, they're pretty cute too. OH, and how about a new baby with a puppy, that's powerful cute. Yup, babies and dogs, that's good stuff alright... most of the time.

Usually, when a family adds a new baby to the "pack", everyone works together to adjust to the new dynamic. Sometimes, however, dog owners find themselves in a strange predicament. Sometimes their first "baby" has some trouble adjusting when the first human baby arrives. Dogs are emotional beings and, not unlike how an older child might lash out at the change in a family structure, your dog may react as well. Often a dog's reaction may just be one of caution when the new baby comes home. It could take a few days for him/her to get comfortable with the new smells and sounds and a shift in attention. In some extreme cases though, a dog can start to show aggressive behaviours around the new baby. This is when it can get tricky.
