The Basics of Effective Dog Training for a Happier Dog

  • 19/02/2014

The basics of dog training involves understanding that a dog is a dog and expects to be treated as such, otherwise you end up with a confused dog or one with behavioural problems.

A dog becomes a special member of the family. However, just like our children we need to train the dog to do as we expect it to do. We need to have a dog that is well mannered and obedient, and possibly perform the odd trick.

Being a pack animal training does not come naturally for them to obey. Some breeds are harder than others, particularly the hound breeds. Your dog needs to be coached through firmness and kindness, but never through physical pain.

Never ever hit or smack a dog as it will cause them to become nervous or aggressive. As you possibly already know, training your dog will require a lot of patience and perseverance.

Consistency is also a very important thing to achieve during the time you own the dog. To achieve consistency, be certain to use the same commands for the tasks that you want your dog to perform. Avoid creating confusion using an entirely different command for the same task you require of him. That just leads to confusion.

Always give your dog praise whenever he has done something right.

Your dog will respond really well to lots of praise.

Reprimand him when he does the wrong thing or does not comply.

This will let him understand those behaviors that you like and dislike. You have two options for reprimanding. First, correct him right on the spot. Second, ignore him when he approaches you. This will let him realize that his behavior is unacceptable.

When you decide to train your dog yourself with the guidance of a handbook, or with any of the training aids available online, please remember the most important thing - Any type of act or trick has to be repeated again and again! It is only through repetition that your dog will get the hang of it.

Just as we humans can be forgetful, so do our dogs. Dogs need to be reminded and instructions repeated often. Once your dog has mastered a particular command, he will not need ongoing instruction for that command.

A well trained dog will be well behaved and have a good temperament. Your dog will know where he fits in the family system. Train your dog so that he understands who is boss.

Dogs do have a tendency to take over and be the boss, if they realize that the owner is not taking the initiative.

People usually admire a dog that follows its master's commands
and is well behaved.

By spending time together in training strengthens your relationship. Gain an understanding of your dogs speed and ability of learning as all dogs are different.

And if you want him to train, then understand his feelings and take them into consideration. Generally your dog will want to please you.

Go ahead and start with some basic training like to heel or fetch.
