New Puppy FAQ

  • 06/01/2014

The first few months of puppy parenting can be challenging and frustrating if you aren't prepared. Here are a few commonly asked questions regarding puppy training. Arming yourself with the answers to puppy FAQs can help make training a happy, rewarding experience.

How do I potty train my puppy?

In the first few days of potty training, you'll realize the secret is training yourself to take your puppy outside often. You should take your puppy out every hour, telling him to 'Go potty'. When your puppy goes potty outside, you should praise him, A LOT. If your puppy has an accident inside, do not punish him. Thoroughly clean the mess to remove any odor so your puppy won't think that spot is his personal restroom.

How do I crate train my puppy?

Crate training your puppy helps maintain your sanity and your puppy's safety. It is EXTREMELY important that you do NOT use your puppy's crate as a form of punishment. You should slowly introduce your puppy to his crate and praise him when he enters it on his own free will. Also, do not immediately close the crate when your puppy enters it. Putting toys in the crate also creates an incentive for your puppy to enter it on his own.

How do I teach my puppy to walk on a leash?

It is very important to give your puppy daily exercise. Going for walks helps keep him calm and prevents him from chewing up household items. In the beginning, leash training sessions should be brief. Always praise your puppy when he is walking at your side. If he starts to pull on the leash, stop immediately. This will teach your puppy that when he pulls, he gets nowhere.

How often should I feed my puppy?

Until puppies reach six months of age, they should be fed three times a day. Once he reaches six months old, you can start feeding him twice daily. It is important to feed your puppy food that is high in fat, with very few preservatives. Mixing dry and wet food together also helps your puppy when he needs to go to the bathroom. Using wet food alone can create runny stools, while using only dry food can lead to constipation.

How do I train my puppy?

Training requires a lot of repetition and patience. You should follow three steps when training your puppy...

1. Give a simple command using a hand gesture
2. Help perform the command
3. Praise when performed properly

Knowing the answers to these questions can help create a stress free environment for you and your furry bundle of joy. Practice these tips consistently and you will be the proud owner of a well trained, well behaved dog!
