There are many important aspects of dog grooming to remember when deciding whether to groom at home or take your dog to a professional groomers. You must decide if you have all the proper tools of grooming, enough space and the knowledge so that everything goes smoothly for you and your dog.
Some of the basic tools used in dog grooming are nail clippers, hair clippers, combs, brushes, a bath apparatus, and a blow-dryer. Clipping a dog's nails is tricky. Dogs have veins that run through their nails so you must make sure you talk to a vet and extensively research how to properly clip a dog's nails so that you don't harm the dog. There is a huge variety of combs and brushes for dogs, based on how thick their coat is, how much they shed naturally, and how you want to cut or shape their coat. For show dogs, many owners get very detailed cuts for their dog because they are largely based on their appearance. Some of the different types of brushes will brush the hair on their undercoat, while others are meant for just the top coat. Some form of a bath apparatus is needed for dog grooming so that you can effectively shampoo your dog without making a big mess. For smaller dogs, a bathtub or shower will work. For larger dogs, you will want to make sure to have enough room outdoors so that you can wash them and let them shake off without dirtying other parts of your house. When bathing your dog, start with his body and legs first. Shampooing his head should be the last step so that when you rinse him from top to bottom, all the shampoo and dirt flows down off him. A blow dryer is necessary to efficiently dry the entire dog.
Before blow drying your dog, you should towel dry all the excess water off of him. When blow drying your dog, you need to make sure the setting is on a low heat so you don't burn your dog. Also, you will want to make sure an entire section is dry before moving on to the next body part. Don't forget to dry the paws. Be careful not to aim the blow dryer near the eyes or into their ears.
Keeping a dog groomed makes the dog look good, smell nice, and keeps the dog happy. Regular walks will help keep your dog happy. And by keeping him clean and happy, your dog will maintain his health. Remember, a quick 10 minute groom session daily will pay off in the long run.
