How to Nip Puppy Biting in the Bud
- 26/01/2014
It will be good to have a puppy as a pet, but it can be pretty complicated for first time owners to be able to discipline their little dogs off the bat. Fortunately, there are different things that you can do in order to speed up the process of your pet dropping the puppy biting habit. With a few simple steps and some loving patience, you can guide your dog to playful and appropriate teething while nipping biting in the bud.
Prevent Puppy Biting by Socialize Your Dog
For one, you may try to bring your puppy near other dogs, for this will allow him to develop a more endearing personality. Being around your other pets is not socializing. That would be like saying your kids are well socialized because they play well with their brothers and sisters. It just does not work that way. Puppies have to play with other puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats.
By becoming more socialized with others like him, your puppy will also be more friendly and endearing to humans as well. He will also learn the appropriate mouthing boundaries in his own language.
Punishment Not Effective for Puppy Biting
While your first urge may be to hit the nose of your puppy when he bites you, it is imperative that you avoid using negative punishment as a means to discourage puppy biting. More often than not, puppies who are hit when they bite turn out to be more violent than their owners would want.
Instead, try to do everything that you can to show your puppy that it can trust you. By building its trust, you will be able to drastically minimize the time when he would get the urge to bite you, intentionally or by play.
If in Doubt, Find a Professional Puppy Trainer
If all else fails, you can get the help of a professional pet trainer in instilling the right discipline in your puppy. In exchange for a certain amount, your puppy trainer will not only get your puppy to stop biting, but will also learn different tricks as well.
Believe it or not, your puppy trainer can also potty train your dog, allowing you to minimize the time that you would have to spend cleaning up after it. Just make sure that you choose a reputable dog trainer, so as to ensure that you will not be wasting your money on hiring an ineffective trainer.
