- 27/11/2010
Puppy Grooming step by step
Ensure that Your Pup Enjoys Grooming:
Puppy should be trained as he/she feels comfortable when they are handled by their owners, Teach your puppy to be handled. You can give them a treat when they obey your order. When you groom your puppy always try to do your work with lots of patience and care. You can play with your puppy when they act mischievously during grooming stuff. After some fun you can start all over again. But remember, only do grooming when your puppy feels comfortable about it otherwise your puppy will create problems during his/her grooming.
The most important thing is that your puppy should trust you completely. there are many ways you can do it--
1) By sitting next to him at meal times.
2) Put your hand inside his food bowl, and offer him food in from your hand, or take it from his mouth and then give it back to him.
3) By giving him/her some food from your plate.
When to start Grooming:
You can start Grooming right away with your new puppy. Many people think that it is a mistake to groom dogs under six months of age. They worry that brushing may be too rough on a puppy at this age. But the truth is actually opposite of this. Most of the puppies will come from the breeders or natural shelter with a dirty environment. These dogs need to be bathed and it will do no harm.
If you want to take proper care of your puppy you should know how to take care of his coat, skin, teeth and nails.
Steps in puppy grooming:
Bathing a puppy:
1) Water temperature should be around 15-40 degree Celsius. Don't use too cold water or too hot water.
2) Puppy under 9 weeks can be bathed with plain water or with gentle puppy shampoo. Make sure that shampoo should not go inside his/her eyes and ears.
3) If your puppy is suffering from flea and tick, you can use a flea and tick shampoo on your puppy, but until he/she is 2.5 months old. If your puppy is younger than that you can give him Capstar, a pill used to kill fleas and ticks on dogs after consulting your vet doctor.
Brushing:
1) The brush should be soft for puppies e.g "pin and bristle" brushes.
2) Don't try too hard. Do it with love and care.
3) Start brushing from head to tail and then from neck to legs.
4) Get them used to it now so they will let you do the same when they are adults.
Nail trimming:
1) Make sure that your puppy is comfortable when their paws are handled by you.
1) Use a dog nail trimmer.
2) Don't trim nails too short.
3) When you are able to see red color tissue near edge of nails, stop cutting. Just file to make edge smooth.
Clean The Ears:
1) Use a paper towel or sometimes even a moist cotton ball.
2) If you find something bad brown and sticky inside his/her ears or find smelling bad, you should inform your vet doctor that your dog has an infected ear.
3) Don't push too hard.
Brush The Teeth:
1) Puppies start losing their baby teeth between 4 to 7 months of age.
2) Use toothpaste formulated specially for dogs.
3) Let your puppy taste toothpaste first.
4) Use toothbrush designed for dogs and begin brushing his teeth.
Benefits of Grooming:
The time shared by you and your dog will strengthen the bond between the two of you. Proper grooming will remove the dead skin cells and hair, This will not only improve the look of the coat, but will also improve blood circulation of the skin. It stimulates the lymphatic system and improves immune system. It will also save a lot of money because professional groomer will charge a lot.
