How to Give Your Dog a Pill
- 13/11/2012
If the thought of giving your dog a pill fills you with dread, you probably have one of those pets that will not take a pill no matter how you disguise it. Luckily, there's a straightforward way to make your dog take her medication.
Giving Your Pet a Pill
Have you tried unsuccessfully to give your pet her medication by coating it with peanut butter or hiding it in a piece of hotdog, bread or cheese? It just seems to be in a dog's nature to reject taking a pill no matter how tasty you try to make it. If you're tired of watching her spit the pill back out on the floor, stop fooling around with the food and give her the medication straight up.
- Open your dog's mouth by inserting your thumb in the side of her mouth between her teeth.
- With your other hand, place the pill as far back on the center of her tongue as you can. Be as careful as possible because she's going to struggle a bit.
- Quickly close her mouth while tilting it upward, and blow gently into her nostrils. This triggers her swallowing reflex, and this will make her lick her nose.
- When you think she has swallowed, take a good look in her mouth to make sure the pill really went down.
It's As Simple As That
It just takes these four steps to give your pet a pill, and it gets easier for you both with practice. Now doesn't that beat chasing her around with a piece of hotdog?
