How To Cut Dog Nails
- 27/11/2010
Does your dog need a manicure? One of the most dreaded grooming needs of our dogs is their nails. Not only do they hate having their nails cut, we hate doing it. If you hate trimming your dog's nails and want to learn how to keep your dog's nails clipped and trimmed easily, here's how:
First of all, know if you hear a click-click sound while your dog is walking across the kitchen floor, it's time to clip those nails. Long nails on a dog can actually be painful for them. And nails that are really overgrown can even curl up towards your dog's paw, piercing in his pads!
There are several types of nail clippers on the market, so choose one you will feel comfortable using.
Basic Types of Dog Nail Clippers:
- Guillotine clipper - This one cuts when you insert the tip of the nail into a circular opening and the squeeze down on it. Good for large breed dogs.
- Scissor clippers - These work more like scissors to cut the nail.
- Grinder - This is a great way to finish off the nail or for easy maintenance. There is the Pedipaws brand or you can use a professional grinder (like the one a dog groomer would use) or even a dremel.
note: If you are at all unsure about the process, ask your vet to show you how to do it the first time.
5 Easy Steps for Trimming Dog Nails
- Get supplies ready: Before you begin, gather up the supplies you will need to have on-hand: clippers, styptic powder or cornstarch, a damp wash cloth, dry towel, and some dog treats.
- Calm your Dog: Calm your dog with a relaxing massage or by softly stroking him all over until he gets sleepy. Continue the massage down his legs and eventually to his paws.
- A Few at a Time: Try to cut only a few nails on your first session and then offer up a treat as a reward. Wait a few hours and then try to do a few more. Continue this process, even if it takes a few days to get all four paws completed. Be sure and cut only the very tip end of each nail so you don't cut into the quick.
- Smooth the Edges: Use an emery board or grinder to smooth down each clipped nail.
- Reward Your Dog: Besides treats, take your dog for a quick walk around the block when you finish. With rewards like this, it won't be long before your dog begins looking forward to having his nails trimmed.
