How to Adopt A Dog for Free?

  • 31/05/2020

Are you longing to have a dog but you cannot afford the breeder’s fees? Then, fret no more because, in this article, we will help you find ways on how to adopt a dog for free.

Where to look?

1. Ask a friend

You are one lucky person if you have a friend who is willing to give you a free pup.

Sometimes no matter how dog lovers guard their dogs during the estrous stage, accidents do happen. Before they knew it, they get the surprise of their lives witnessing the birth of their new and ‘unplanned’ puppies.

Let your friend know your interest in adopting one of the puppies. Chances are, your request will be granted to alleviate their expenses.

2. Newspaper Ads and Craigslist

Flyers that are distributed for free often have a list of free puppies for adoption. You may also want to check Craigslist and other online classified ads in your city.

What dog breeds can you find? Most likely these puppies are crossbreeds. Dog breeders give these pups for free as they only have a slim chance of finding buyers for crossbreed dogs.

Beware of being scammed. In case you are asked to pay for the shipping cost, most likely, it is a scam. The best way for you to do is to get the puppy yourself.

3.   Animal Shelters

You can find healthy puppies and adult dogs in animal shelters. Although some may not be given absolutely for free, the price is way below compared if you will buy from a breeder or at a pet store.

It works this way: Once you find a puppy to your liking and the animal shelter approves your application for adoption, you will be asked to give a small donation. These monetary donations are used to cover expenses for spaying, neutering, vaccinations, among others.

4.   Breed Rescue

If you are specific on the breed that you want to adopt for free, then the breed rescue is the place to go.

You just have to be very patient to wait for that specific dog breed to be available. Most often than not, the available dogs are adults and are fostered by the breed rescue team.

If your application is processed, the breed rescue will only ask you for a donation. You’d also be informed about the dog’s activity level, social problems, kid-friendliness, just to name a few.

5.   Parking Lot Puppies

These puppies come from backyard breeders. Some of the pups may be given for free while some may be sold at a very cheap price. We do not recommend that you pay for these parking lot puppies to stop puppy millers from irresponsible dog breeding practices.

Conclusion

As a dog lover, you can help the plight of unwanted dogs by adopting one from the sources we have outlined above. Yes, you may get a dog for free but be sure that you have the budget to give your new pal a comfortable life that it deserves.
