  • 14/02/2013

Almost everyone today is busy due to work. Some people may even work overtime occasionally to earn more money to satisfy their every need. When faced with the same situation, it may not be too good especially if you own a dog. Dogs are by nature nosy and curious animals. They tend to explore a lot to stimulation their minds. Leaving your dog unattended for long hours because of a busy work schedule is generally not a good idea. You may come home to find holes in your garden or your precious items chewed upon by your dog because of boredom.

Hence it is a good idea to keep your dogs busy whenever you are not at home. In short, you need to find ways to provide healthy diversions for your dogs.

Fortunately for us, there are dog toys designed to keep the dog occupied whenever we are not around. They are usually fun and interactive offering your dog hours of fun when left alone. For curious puppies who love to explore and chew a lot of things, listed below are some of the toys you can provide to keep them occupied and their attention diverted.

Brain Toys

These are toys designed to stimulate your dog's mind and keep him from getting bored especially if he is alone in the house. These toys typically releases food as your dog rolls them around. Because most puppies and dogs are very food motivated, these toys can provide hours of fun for them. A famous brand of brain toy is the Kong. These are usually made of rubber. They are available in different shapes usually with a hole down the middle where you can fill with great tasting treats. If you have a dog that loves to dig whenever you are not home, simply give him a Kong. Make sure you fill it up with peanut butter or of other great tasting dog paste to get his attention. He will have hours of fun trying to dig out those tasty stuff, leaving your garden safe and untouched.

Chew Toys

If you have a dog that cannot seem to stop chewing on inappropriate stuff especially when you are not home, it's time to provide lots of alternative chew toys and teach him what are the appropriate items he can chew on. This is important because if left unchecked, your dog may eventually endanger himself by chewing on electrical wirings or other hazards. There are many brands of chew toys in the market. They come in different shapes and sizes. Some designed for strong chewers are made of harder materials than others.

To teach a dog to chew on his chew toy rather than your furniture or any other inappropriate item, present both items to the dog. If he chews on the wrong item, simply tell him "no" and instead offer the right one. Praise and reward with treats whenever he takes the right one.

Also, before your dog is fully trained against destructive chewing, it's a good idea to crate him for his own safety whenever he is left unsupervised. Alternatively, you can proof your house by applying bitter apple spray on all inappropriate items he loves to chew.

Lastly, before you leave the house, make sure your dog has access to his chew toys.

If you have a boisterous dog, other than keeping it occupied with toys when you are not home, you may wish to looking into dog sports like agility or dog dancing as an outlet for it to expend its energy.
