Fish Oil for Dogs

  • 22/03/2011

I am sure by now you have heard all about all the wonderful benefits of Omega 3 fish oil and the phenomenal effects it has on the human body, but what about your four legged friend? Are you aware that pets, especially dogs, can also benefit tremendously from Omega 3 fatty acids?

Your vet knows! Veterinarians have been using nutrient rich Omega 3 fatty acids for years in the treatment of dogs, and it not at all unlike the effects humans undergo when faced with an Omega 3 Deficiency. Studies are now surfacing that some very common dog chow, such as kibble, actually has the Omega 3 removed! Why in the world would they do this? simple, cost and shelf life of the product. Omega 3 fatty acids are removed from dog food and often are replaced with Omega 6! Omega 6 is like the evil twin of Omega 3, and you should never get the two mixed up.

Omega 6 can cause a whole host of problems, including inflammation of the tissue, in both humans and dogs. Omega 3 and Omega 6, when induced in the body together, will actually compete against each other, and unfortunately, Omega 6 usually wins. It is also far cheaper to insert Omega 6 into dog chow vs loosing the shelf life when keeping nutrient rich Omega 3 in the product. The problem with the shelf life is not so much the shelf life at all, its that Omega 3 tends to promote a much stronger smell to dog food, and studies have shown that some irresponsible dog owners actually refuse to buy it! But trust me, your dog loves it! I mean really, just think about that for a second, its dog food, of course its going to smell bad to us..but is it really about us? I don't think its worth the sacrifices that are being made just for the big dog food companies to make an even bigger buck. Did you know Omega 3 can:

* Brighten your dogs fur line and coat
* Improve your animals joint tissue and promote flexibility
* Improved heart health and vision
* Improved mental state of your four legged friend! (studies are now showing that the added benefit of more Omega 3 fatty acids can induce your dog with a more calmed state of well being)

These reasons don't even scratch the surface of why Omega 3 is important for both humans, and our beloved pets. I would also like to add that most if not all of these benefits have shown up in felines as well.
