Dog Skin Allergies - Pinpointing the Cause and Treating It
- 15/05/2012
Dog skin allergies are common but at the same time not easy to pinpoint. Patience and a keen sense of detail is needed in diagnosing and determining the likely culprit that causes the allergies.
Symptoms include sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. Their nose and their eyes may also have runny looking discharge. If their digestive system is affected, it may result in watery stools, diarrhoea, or vomiting.
If you are set upon eliminating your dog's skin allergies, you have a big task in hand and it can keep you busy. Some dogs suffer from a constant dry and itchy skin. Others get it out of the blue for no obvious reasons. Dog owners will have to be patient in dealing with dog skin allergies. Some ways you can identify the problem are:
Recognising the cause of irritation: If you can identify the cause of the allergy, you will be able to eliminate or limit your dog's exposure to it.
A condition known as contact dermatitis occurs when an irritant comes in close proximity with the skin. These irritants can be in the form of shampoos and sprays that are applied directly on the skin and coat. Other allergic substances can include chemicals like carpet cleaners, laundry detergents, other household cleaners, and some plants.
Apart from that, dogs are also prone to allergies from dog food and medications.
