Dog Seizures: What You Need to Know

  • 01/02/2014

Pets are a tremendously important part of our lives, so one thing that you should be aware of is the environmental factors that might cause dog seizures. You can tell when your dog is having one of these because he or she will most likely be shaking uncontrollably at strange moments.

So you should take the time to understand what a seizure is in the first place. Your brain and nervous system are in charge of many of your physical and mental functions, and sometimes there are random neurons that just fire off, possibly causing a lapse in awareness, but also possibly causing physical thrashing around; the repetition of these symptoms is called epilepsy.

Stress is one major cause of these seizures, and this stress comes in many forms. It can be because of things like being too hot or too cold, and it can also be form things like a feeling of danger, nightmares, or even excitement that comes from meeting a stranger or strange animal in the neighborhood.

Seizures can also be a direct result of the buildup of toxins and the body and the brain, and this buildup is often caused from low-quality food in their diets. If you take a moment to think, you'll realize that feeding dogs grains and vegetables is actually very contrary to what they might be eating out in the wild if there were free; the diet they are most naturally adapted to.

The ingredients in food that may help along seizures include chemical compounds like food colors, artificial coloring and flavoring, preservatives and antibiotics, and any other types of dyes that end up in there to make the food look better but not necessarily be better for the dog. These man-made chemicals end up in the dogs brain, and have to be released somehow eventually, hence the seizures.

There are other things that can cause seizures as well, from concussions to heartworms, toxic plants to fertilizers in the yard, and chemicals they may be exposed to in your house. There is also the matter of genetics, and some breeds are more disposed to having seizures than others, so do your research to find out what your dog is.

As well as having seizures, an unhealthy dog may exhibit other symptoms as well, including excessive shedding or hair loss, back injuries, joint pain, arthritis, low energy, and bad skin. Remember, all of these things point to each other, so health is as holistic for dogs as it is for humans.

The best way to show love to your dog is through proper care and understanding, so make sure that you have some basic information about dog seizures so that you can prevent any unnecessary pain for them and your family.
