In the following section we will closely look at all of above mentioned dog seizure causes in detail.

Brain Tumor & Head Injury: A brain tumor could be of 2 types, one known as primary and the other as metastases. A tumor while growing puts pressure on tissues in the brain resulting in seizures. In addition to it in case there is a skull injury which cracks the skull and creates pressure on dog's brain resulting in seizures.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever & Lyme Disease: The cause for these diseases is a tick which transmits the disease to dogs. Those dogs with Lyme disease show signs of arthritis along with seizures.

Distemper Virus: This virus gets transmitted in air but other mediums like saliva, feces or urine can also transmit it. There are two stages in this disease where in the first stage fever develops and in the second stage brain gets affected resulting in seizures.

Toxins in Environment: Around the house we have many things such as pine or olive trees, mushrooms, insecticides, flea control powders and spreading junipers among others. Many of these have toxins which are harmful for dogs and result in seizures.

Epilepsy: It has two forms; primary and secondary. If external stimulus causes seizures then it falls under the category of secondary epilepsy seizure and here the source for such seizure is known. On the other hand primary epilepsy also called idiopathic epilepsy has no recognized sources.

Hypo or Hyper Conditions: In hypoglycemia which means low level of blood sugar, the dog has seizures before feeding as during that time the blood sugar level is low. Hypocalcemia is endocrine disorder in which calcium level becomes low thereby causing seizures. Hypoxemia also known as hypoxia means decrease in oxygen level in blood and could be lungs disease preventing normal oxygen supply to brain and resulting in seizures.

Hepatic Encephalopathy means an increase in ammonia level in blood due to liver diseases and thereby causing seizures. In kidney disease there is a condition known as Uremia where urea nitrogen level increases in blood and the acidity in blood and is one of the dog seizure causes. Hyperkalemia refers to high potassium level in blood and hyperlipoproteinemia means defective lipid metabolism with both being causes for seizure. Gastrointestinal diseases increase toxin levels thereby causing seizures. Toxoplamosis is a disease for which a germ called protozoan parasite is responsible and one of the symptoms of this disease is seizures.

Lissencephay: This is a rare congenital disease where malformation of the brain is seen and generalized seizures are seen in dogs with this disease.

Conclusion: Hopefully these tips on seizures will help you identify the signs and assist you with consulting a vet about the right treatment for your dog.
