Dog Food For Dogs With Diabetes

What is Diabetes, and How Do I Know If My Dog Has It?

Diabetes Mellitus, also known as Sugar Diabetes, is a common condition in canines, as well as in humans. Diabetes occurs when the body is no longer able to process sugar correctly. If you notice that your dog has very little energy and is drinking more water than usual, it could indicate that your dog is suffering from diabetes.

What Can I Do To Help My Pet?

One of the best ways to manage your pet's blood sugar levels and keep them where they should be is to manage your dog's diet, and regulate the levels of insulin. This will prevent the blood sugar levels from rising too high, or dropping too low - either of which can be fatal.

What Food Should My Diabetic Dog Eat?

If your pet has diabetes, it is best to place them on a diet that is low in simple carbohydrates and that contains ingredients that can be rapidly broken down and converted into glucose by the body. The best way to ensure that your pet receives the food and nutrients it needs is to make it yourself. Diabetic dog food is also available from some vets, but these commercially produced foods do not necessarily contain all the nutrients your pets requires due to the processing that it is put through.

Should I Take My Pet To The Vet?

Should you suspect that your dog may have diabetes, the first thing to do is take your canine friend to the vet for tests. Once the diagnosis of diabetes is confirmed, the vet will then be able to recommend the right diet for the animal as well as the frequency of feeding. If you follow the vet's guidelines, your dog should be able to live a long and happy life, despite the diabetes.

What Ingredients Can I Use For Homemade Diabetic Dog Food?

According to many veterinarians, dogs with diabetes should eat lean red meats with minimal pork and poultry. Before being cooked, all excess fat and skin should be removed from the meat. Including some cooked vegetables in the diet can be beneficial, but remember; dogs are naturally carnivores and are designed to receive most of their nutrients from meat. Foods that are low in fats and sugar, but have a high carbohydrate content will help balance your pet's diet, as well as help keep the blood sugar levels where they should be.
