Dog Behavior - Tips For Stopping Submissive Peeing

Do not be too upset when your dog give way to submissive peeing. Apparently, it is normal canine behavior as a way to show he or she is not a threat to anyone. However, it can be quite embarrassing if they choose to do this in public. In the case of a male dog, they may have noticed a female dog nearby and got exceptionally excited.

It must be noted that dogs who submissively urinate, would usually give way to this type of behavior when greeting other dogs or people. Especially, in cases where they are not familiar to them. On the other hand, dog who are scolded may become very nervous and pee right where they are. It is almost as if they lose control over their bladder without meaning to. Some would drop large puddles, while others would only produce dribbles.

Submissive Urination is More Common with Puppies

Submissive urination is most frequent in puppies, however many adult dogs submissively urinate as well, especially those that seem to lack confidence. The behavior is more common in certain breeds such as for retrievers. Some would submissively urinate only when interacting with visitors, some only with other dogs, and some with everyone.

What Could be the Cause of Submissive Peeing?

If you've recently changed the quantity or type of food you give your dog, he might then submissively urinate. Often, after a diet change, your pet dog will defecate loose stools or pee quite often. It is a case of getting to understand your dog and making much needed changes once detected.

Untrained Dogs or Puppies

This is what generally happens when you have puppies who are less than 12 weeks old. They are less likely to be house trained, and may simply not have learned where to pee and where not to empty their bladder yet. Alternatively, the situation may be entirely physical. Many puppies under 12 weeks haven't developed bowel and bladder control, and they don't seem to be able to "hold it" for longer than a very brief time.
