Commonalities Between Dog Socialization and Human Socialization
- 01/02/2014
Socialization or taking part in social activities is essential to the character as well as emotional formation of humans. The same principle applies to domestic animals especially man's best friend. Dog socialization is a vital component of your typical household pets' development.
In fact, the dog socialization process should be carried out while they are still puppies.
Dog socialization encourages a puppy to intermingle with as many people and domesticated animals as possible. As soon as your canine reaches several months old, the young dog must be able to be patted by human beings, play with other pups, or be placed under the watch of dog trainer or veterinarian.
However, it is important to check with the veterinarian if dog socialization can be carried out for your dog, as it must have its vaccinations first, since accidents happen and it may occur that a puppy can accidentally bite a child or adult. Research says that rabies is most dangerous during a dog's early years.
The act of socializing helps a puppy to become contented and in good physical shape. It also helps the pet to behave properly.
Again, according to studies, puppies that have exposed to the methods of dog socialization are less prone to develop behavioral issues. Dogs that are not given any chance to circulate can be sacred of people or other dogs or become hostile.
It is better to coach your puppy about new things instead of giving training when unmanageable habits have already started to set in.
Dog socialization should be done in the presence of many people and require different scenarios. Pet exercises are another vital aspect of socializing.
Likewise, the puppy has to be trained in a gentle manner so it can also respond properly to human actions. You can start taking your puppy for early morning walks, meeting other dogs, going to the groomer and the pet shop and riding in the family car. It has to be kept positive at all times.
It is advisable not to force a puppy to do something that is does not like.
Instead, encourage the puppy to approach strangers and things.
Do not let a dog perform something which is beyond its comfort zone. It is always recommended by experts that dog socialization must be done by utilizing traditional conditioning strategies.
Under this system, the conditioning is carried out by offering treats to the dog. The rule of thumb is one person should handle the puppy while the other provides the treats. This is what is commonly known among professional dog conditioning experts as 'socialization motivation'.
It may be quite difficult at first but it takes a lot of practice to perfect the entire procedure. Dogs are almost like humans, intelligent, friendly and loyal to their masters.
That is why dog socialization is an important part of the lives of the dogs but humans as well. It may even be an investment to spend money, time and effort in training your puppies but the results can be very rewarding in the long-term.
