Adopting A Dog: Visiting A Shelter
- 14/02/2010
- Categorized in: Charity, Rescue and Welfare
Adopting a dog is more popular than ever at this moment in time because the media highlights the plight of abused and mistreated animals now more than ever, which in turn is raising awareness in society and encouraging individuals to help out. Adopting a dog, in itself, is not a complicated process, but there are numerous things to consider before you actually bring a dog home.
Visiting the shelter from which you will be adopting a dog is an absolute must. There is no one reason why you should visit a shelter in advance, but a whole list of reasons instead! You would not buy a car without test-driving it and researching its history, so apply that to the process of adopting a dog. Although a car and a dog are nowhere near the same things, the shelter will give you an idea of what you are letting yourself in for!
Visiting a shelter can be distressing, but is essential because it gives you an idea of the condition that the dog you are adopting is in as well as how it has been treated. You can view the dog and spend time with him or her before you make your decision. You can also speak to workers there about adopting a dog, and find out all the information you can about the care, the needs and the temperament of any given dog there.
It may also be wise to check out the shelter in great depth too. Most shelters do look after their dogs really well but there is the odd one that does not. Dogs may emerge in worse health than when they got there and adopting a dog should not be about saving them from a shelter! If you know all of the facts though, you can make an informed decision!
Adopting a dog should be a life changing decision, so do not rush it. Visit a shelter and take a look around. Talk to the people there and ask questions. That way, you can be 100% sure that you are making the right decision!
