Many people choose to begin the training process with crate training because it tends to be extremely effective. However, before you can do that you need to purchase a crate. There are numerous types available to you so you have to be fully sure that you are making the right decision.

This article is designed to give you a quick guide to the available types of crate for crate training, so here goes:

  • Plastic - The plastic crate is one of the most common types of crate because it is rigid and perfect for a variety of forms of travel. They also tend to be safer because they offer your dog a lot more protection. However, they are not flexible and take up an awful lot of room, especially if you have a large dog breed.
  • Aluminium – This type of crate is more flexible because it can be fixed or fold away without being too heavy or bulky. Your dog will not be able to chew it or break it and it will not rust. It is also suitable or everything from crate training to taking your dog to the vet.
  • Wire – These are popular in kennels and dog shows but they are heavy and can be a little uncomfortable. Wire crates are suitable for car travel though and can allow your dog to see far more when in motion than other types of dog crate.
  • Soft – Soft crates are extremely light, highly flexible and can make your dog very comfortable. They also allow air to flow around the crate. However, you should never use a soft crate for travel purposes. Similarly, they are easy to damage if your dog has a habit or chewing! This category also includes the new tents that are around. They look good but are not necessarily secure.
