When you are grooming a beagle you need to learn a few tricks. We need to consider the whole dog and all aspects of his health not just one or two. Getting your dog to work with you with you sometimes is a challenge. I want to offer you a few tips and some things to consider as you care for your beagle.

We all have seen really over weight beagles, it is so easy to over feed them. They will act like you have forgotten to feed them for days and can't go on. When they look up at you and wag their tail it is hard to resist. That cute little guy would probably eat until he explodes, if you let him.

Your beagle should weigh about 20-25 Lbs fully grown. The way they act like they are always starving it's pretty easy to over feed him. They gain weight fast if we aren't careful. For them to have a long and active life we have to help them control their food intake. They have no food willpower so they depend on us to help them.

I know, we all love to give our dogs treats and they do love it so. I have a tip for you. I have discovered that they really don't care what the treat is. We started giving our beagle whole carrots and he acts like it is steak.

If you sell it well to your dog he will think he is snacking on the best thing ever and in some ways it is. The hard carrots will clean their teeth while not producing some of that evil dog gas that some of the treats we can buy will.

Taking Care of Your Beagles Coat

A beagles coat is short but thick and needs to be brushed. The more frequent the brushing the better his coat. it will get rid of the loose hairs and spread his natural oils that keep him looking so good. He is probably not going to like bath time so be thankful he isn't very big. When you towel him off all will be forgiven and he will be happy again.

While you are drying him off it's a good time to check your beagle from his nose to his tail. Look for trouble spots. They can be in his mouth, eyes, ears and right on back. This will be your best opportunity to check him thoroughly.

Clipping the Toenails

It takes two of us to clip our beagles toenails. It wasn't pleasant but we always won. It seemed like we had to cut them every two weeks, they do grow fast.

We learned a way to get nail trimming done peacefully. It still takes two of us but the fight isn't there. We hold a treat just above him, he locks on the treat and we just clip away. All he wants is the treat. Good grooming of your beagle takes work. Proper care will pay off in the long run.
