All About Yorkies
- 24/09/2012
If you love small, active dogs, a Yorkshire Terrier might be the right pet for you. Yorkies are a super adorable and very tiny breed of Terriers. They are so tiny that they belong to a group of dogs called 'Toy' size. A typical Yorkie can grow to 4-7 lbs, however some are even smaller. Their coat is a combination of black, white and brown with a silky texture.
The Yorkshire Terrier Originated in Yorkshire, Northern England. In the mid 19th century Scottish workers brought small terrier breeds when they migrated to Yorkshire for work. Breeding between these dogs resulted in the small stature and long hair that is seen in the breed today and the name resulted from their originating in the city of the same name.
The Yorkshire terrier is Intelligent, spirited, loyal, brave and alert. They can sometimes be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs and other small animals, but this is easily overcome with some socialization. They do best with older children and they can be dependent and may need a lot of attention, which should be no problem as Yorkie owners tend to spoil! Yorkshire Terriers make excellent watchdogs as they are very alert and can still make noise regardless of their tiny stature. Yorkies are generally easy to train, but can become stubborn if not given proper boundaries. For this reason, is important to work on training them as puppies.
Yorkshire Terriers need regular grooming with daily to weekly combing or brushing of the coat. There are a variety of brushes on the market that work well for their silky hair. Yorkies are active dogs and daily walks are recommended. Many owners put their long hair up in bows or clips as decor. Yorkies enjoy their playtime. Running around will take up a lot of their time and are very active indoors. They are sensitive to the cold and prefer warmer climates.
Yorkies coats are left long for showing and may be trimmed to floor length for ease of movement or a less shaggy appearance. Sometimes the hair on the tips of the ears and around the feet is trimmed for the same reasons. The traditional long coat can be high maintenance including oiling the coat and wrapping the pooch in rice paper or plastic as a treatment. As mentioned above, Yorkie owners often pamper their pets and this type of coat care dates back to the beginning of this breed. Some of the most popular small breed dogs in the US, many people have fallen in love with Yorkies and are willing to do whatever it takes to make these tiny protectors happy.
