A Spanish Hunter - The Ibizan Hound

  • 01/10/2016

Ibizan Hounds were and are used for hunting small prey, like rabbit. In addition to that role today, they are also family pets, used for agility courses, tracking, and competing in hunting games. These are very athletic dogs, that jump very well. This means that they require daily exercise of 20 to 30 minutes a couple times a day. They make good jogging companions and actually tolerate apartment dwelling - if they can get exercise a couple times a day. If you leave your dog outdoors while you are at work, make sure you have a fence at least 6 feet high. Anything less and your Ibizan Hound could jump over the fence! Take the same care with a dog park - make sure that the fence is at least 6 feet tall. Also, be aware that the dog has a strong prey drive and will pursue small game with relish. They will also chase anything that moves - even cars. They easily and readily can escape from many areas, so check those fences carefully!

The appearance of the Ibizan Hound is unique to the breed. They have a narrow pointed head and face, with large erect ears. They have an athletic build, usually standing about 22 to 27 inches tall and weighing about 50 pounds. One of the most unique features though, is the flesh colored pigment on the nose and eye rims. While most dogs are black, the Ibizan Hound is flesh colored, so there is nothing wrong with the dog. The eyes are amber colored, not the typical brown we see in other breeds. The coat can be smooth or wire haired and the breed does shed. Brushing the dog, a couple times a week is about all needed to control the shedding. This breed does not tolerate cold temperatures well, so you may need a coat for the dog, if it will be outside for any time in 40 degree or below weather. Keep the dog warm enough that it does not shiver. This means that they tolerate hot weather well and will deal with these temperatures without problems, as long as they have some shelter and water. The Ibizan Hound is a healthy dog, without specific health concerns. Rarely, will the breed develop seizures or allergies.

The Ibizan Hound likes to play and run. It will chase children if they are running. As long as the dog and children are socialized to each other, this should not be a problem. The dog will tolerate cats - as long as it is socialized to them. Other small pets will be viewed as prey! While not particularly affectionate, they will snuggle up to you on the couch and become a couch potato if not involved in play. Watch the food on the counter, the Ibizan Hound is a great jumper and will steal things from the counter easily! They are not prone to barking a lot, however, the large ears will give away any activity going on nearby. They do make a good watch dog, but not a good guard dog, as they do like people. Electric fences are not recommended with this breed; they are better off with a true fence. Ibizan Hounds like to entertain people as well and are known as the "clowns" of the dog world. Keep your dog on a leash while in the open, they will chase prey readily and may take a while to return.

The Ibizan Hound can be a fun, entertaining, and active addition to a household. They do not tolerate cold well and are willing to become a couch potato, but they should be exercised daily. Grooming requirements are minimal and regular brushing will help control shedding. Grooming supplies can be purchased at http://www.doggroomingtablesplus.com. This unique looking dog functions as a good watch dog and affectionate family member.
