Modifying Your Home For An Elderly Pet 101
- 24/07/2019
With age, pets will become less mobile, unable to focus as when they were younger, and their needs will become more demanding. Because of that, you’ll need to modify your home to suit your pet’s needs much better, allowing them to walk through the home without hurting themselves and make sure they sleep comfortably. Also, you’ll need to eliminate nearby objects so you don’t end up with ruined carpets. We’ve prepared a few tips to help you get around the entire home redesign much better.
Get them a new bed
Older dogs will often suffer from joint problems, which is why you should consider looking for an orthopedic bed at the nearest store in Sydney. Those beds are specifically designed for older dogs’ needs. Considering they’re made of memory foam as well as liquid and stain-resistant fabric, the bed will accommodate your dog’s physical needs perfectly. If you have a small dog, buy them a bed which is relative to their size to prevent them from feeling insecure in a larger bed. If you’re a cat lover, place their bed close to their litter box so they can relieve themselves without wandering around the house. Cats are more likely to sleep in cave-style beds so try to make a cocoon-like bed in a corner under a table.
Install new floors to fit your pet’s needs
Older pets will probably have more difficulty relieving themselves at the spots they were taught to, which means urinary accidents are more likely to happen around the house. That’s why ceramic tiles or carpet tiles designed for pet incontinence would be a good home-improvement feature. Regular carpets are more difficult to clean, so you should stay away from that fabric. Wood floors are one of the best choices for flooring when you have an older pet in the house, so feel free to contact Sydney Commercial Carpentry if you want to have first-class flooring that will last for years to come. Non-slip rugs, carpet runners, or even yoga mats, can be a great alternative to changing the flooring. They’ll offer better traction for your pet. Look for easy-to-wash fabrics which do not absorb stains and odors quickly.
Enable easier mobility for your pet
Once your dog or a cat starts growing grey hair it’s time you invest in a new raised platform to make sure they can get food and water without having to put their head down too much. As they’ll become less mobile, be sure to have bowls of fresh, clean water all around the house to prevent them from dehydrating. Increased dehydration can lead to increased risk of kidney dysfunction, so be sure to check out pet shops in Sydney and get a few more bowls for your pets. Install anti-slip treads made from carpet or rubber to your stairs to prevent accidents. Install a ramp or shallow stairs to offer your animal easier access to couches, beds, and cars.
Maintain a comfortable temperature in your home
The older the dogs get, the harder it is for them to regulate their body temperature. Extreme heat and coldness can be highly dangerous for older dogs, which is why you should set your thermostat for a comfortable temperature. Fans and an air conditioner are great solutions for cooling down the room during warmer months. On the other hand, a space heater will offer just enough warmth to your pet to keep them comfortable. Don’t keep their bed in too hot or too cold an area, but have them sleep away from the drafts and direct sunlight. Sweaters and pet clothing have become a true hit all over the world, so feel free to get them a sweater at some of the local Sydney pet stores, so they can stay warm and comfy during cold winter.
If your pets started growing grey hair around the muzzle and eyes and have less energy, it means that they're getting old. Soon, their mobility will be limited and they'll have trouble controlling their bladder, which means you'll need to modify your home to fit their needs much better. In order to allow them to move easily around the house and prevent accidents, update floors and install ramps. Make sure their body temperature doesn't reach extreme warmth or coldness and buy them a new comfortable bed that will support their aging body much better.
