7 Ways To Reduce Travel Stress With Pets
- 21/11/2018
Bringing your pet on your travels can be one of the best gifts you can give them. They get to see new sights, smells lots of foreign things (and people’s bottoms), and try exciting experiences. And they do all these with their most favourite person—you!
Although travelling with your pet is filled with fun and excitement, it comes with its own set of frustrations. For instance, the establishments you’re planning to visit may not allow animals inside, and you’ll end up looking for pet-friendly places for most of your trip. That’s probably not how you envision your vacation. If you want a stress-free travel with your fur baby, make sure to keep these things in mind.
Do Your Research
Travelling is a lot like a battle. You can’t head out without ample preparation, especially when you’re travelling with an animal companion. Don’t get too caught up in your excitement; do your research first.
Not all places will be accommodating toward pets. For that reason, you have to choose a destination with a lot of pet-friendly establishments and facilities. You also have to make sure that wherever you go has access to veterinary clinics and pet stores in case you encounter emergencies.
Secure Your Pet’s Documents
When you travel out of the country, you’re required to present your travel documents, like your passport, visa, and identification cards. The same goes for pets. In facts, the requirements are more stringent for them.
In most case, pets need a health certificate when entering another country and going back. This means they have to undergo several medical tests. This is to ensure that they introduce new pathogens, diseases, and parasites into the country, as well as confirm that it’s safe for them to travel. They may also have to get vaccine shots weeks prior to your visit.
It’s illegal to bring pets into another without the proper permits and documents, so make sure to secure them early on to avoid trouble.
Pack the Essentials
For stress-free travel with your pet, you will need to bring some pet supplies. These include a portable grooming kit, a water bottle, a bowl, wet wipes, poop bags, toys, treats. You have to carry these around to prepare for any situation. You can pack these pet essentials in a durable and stylish leather weekender bag, and it can fit right in with your travel style.
During a long car ride, toys and treats can save you (and your car seat) from a bored and full of pent up energy pet. Sometimes, those aren’t enough, so prepare to have lots of stimulating items to distract your pet throughout the road.
Prioritise Health and Safety
Safety is one of your main concerns when travelling with a pet. Although they look very sturdy, dogs, cats, and other pet animals can also easily get sick or injured. Make sure to that they’re vaccines are complete before you take them travelling to prevent them from contraction illness and infections.
As a matter of safety, keep your dog on a leash and have them wear a glow in the dark dog collar, especially if you’re going out at night, on bad weather, and in the wilderness. If you haven’t gotten them microchipped yet, do it before leaving on your trip. You can tack in a pet GPS tracker on their collar to make sure you can locate them at all times.
Final Word
Travelling with a pet can be the most fun and memorable experiences of your life and theirs. As long as you prepare for everything beforehand. Do your research so you don’t have to waste time going around to search for pet-friendly places. Pack the necessary pet supplies, especially toys and treats, and be ready for emergencies.
Most of all, prioritise your pet’s comfort, health, and safety. Don’t force them to try something they’re afraid of. Take breaks once in a while to let them release their pent-up energy. Finally, let them gear up for any possibilities that may occur during your adventures.
