5 Rules For Buying Pet Clothing
- 20/08/2018
There are few things more appealing than a pet in cute little clothes. However, you probably wonder sometimes if your pet needs to wear clothes. To be fair, it isn’t necessary for all pets since some have such a thick coat of fur that they would only end up feeling very hot in clothes. However, for other pets, clothes can offer some extra protection on those days when it rains or when it’s extra cold. Other pets also enjoy wearing the festive and colourful clothing that goes with holidays like Christmas and special occasions. Whatever the reason for buying clothes for your pet, it is important that they are both comfortable and safe. Here are some rules from For the Furry concerning the different varieties of pet clothes out there.
1. Sweatshirts, Sweaters and Coats
These are perfect for pets that have issues keeping warm when the weather is extra cold. Before you get one for your pet, be sure to take measurements of your pet’s chest and neck. The clothing should be snug and fit well. However, it shouldn’t be too tight, and it will leave your pet uncomfortable. These clothes are perfect for dogs with cropped coats, such as poodles, hairless cats, pets with hair growth issues, toy dog breeds and dogs with thin coats like greyhounds.
2. Booties
Booties are excellent protection for your pet's feet. They will protect them from such things as burns caused by the salt poured on streets and sidewalks to de-ice them, cracked pads and frostbite. The booties will be attached to your pet’s feet using Velcro straps. There are also grips on the bottom that help your pet’s feet to maintain their balance and avoid sleeping during those extra icy days.
3. Raincoats
If you live in a very wet climate and your pet happens to love long walks, even when it’s raining outside, then it might be a good idea to get your pet a raincoat. Raincoats can also be pretty useful during the winter as they offer protection from sleet for your pet. You should especially go for the type that is lined with fleece. It will keep your pet warm as well as dry.
4. Pyjamas
Pyjamas are excellent for your pet if it tends to shiver on extra cold winter nights. This is especially true for pets with close-cropped coats, small breeds, hairless pets and older pets. A good example is the Chihuahua, whose coat of fur might provide insufficient protection against extreme cold. Your pet can also wear pyjamas during the day if the weather is especially chilly. Pet pyjamas aren’t like regular human pyjamas in that they don’t include pants.
5. Clothing for Special Occasions
There are also clothes for those special occasions when you would like your pet to share in the celebrations, such as Christmas. There is nothing wrong with these clothes. However, no matter the occasion or the clothing, try to avoid clothing with any strings, buttons or any other accessories that the pet can easily chew off and swallow.
